By ugeshji, Section News Posted on Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 02:41:41 AM EST
Maximum colleges in Delhi University (DU) are offering concession of one to five per cent to girl students. The relaxation has been offered to make colleges gender inclusive.
Sources in the university administration said colleges fix the percentage on their own.
However, they added north campus colleges did not need to offer such concessions, as the gender ratio there was already good there.
"Mostly, colleges on outskirts offer relaxation in marks. Zakir Husain College used to offer the relaxation to attract girl students from the Walled City area," said Gurpreet Tuteja, deputy dean, DU.
Colleges that have offered five per cent relaxation to girls in the second cut-off list are Deshbandhu (evening), Motilal Nehru, Motilal Nehru (evening), Dayal Singh (evening), Satyawati (evening) and Shaheed Bahgat Singh (evening).
"Things have improved considerably in outskirt colleges, as more girls are getting enroled in those colleges. The relaxation has been offered to give girls an extra edge so that they can join undergraduate courses," said a faculty member at Motilal Nehru College.
Bhim Rao Ambedkar College has offered a concession of four per cent to girls.
Colleges that have given a relaxation of three per cent include Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm (ARSD), Dayal Singh, Ram Lal Anand (evening), Satyawati, Shayam Lal and Swami Shradhanand.

Bringing In Transparency, RTI To Cover Deemed Univs, Rules CIC
By akanshaa, Section News Posted on Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 12:20:21 AM EST
In a significant judgment, the Central Information Commission has ruled that deemed universities will have to come under the ambit of the Right to Information Act. The CIC's ruling will thrust transparency on managements of the varsities. From their accounting books to the faculty they hire, from the manner in which they admit students to the fees they charge, everything will now have to be placed in the public domain.
Academics say that the judgment is likely to usher in a sense of relief and will bring much-needed transparency in the working of deemed universities. The CIC ruling came in the case of Shaily Bhashnajla, a faculty of Delhi's Western International University (WIU), who had sought information on recruitment and promotion rules. However, WIU being a deemed university refused to part with information, stating that it was not a public authority.
When the matter came up in the CIC, Shailesh Gandhi, information commissioner, observed, ``Deemed universities are declared to be so by notification in the official gazette by the central government. If this is the case, then a deemed university may come within the definition of `public authority'.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi government to appoint special teachers in each school to cater to the needs of differently-abled students.
``Every school must have special educator. We want you to appoint as many regular teachers as needed. They should be appointed on a permanent basis and their salary must be at par with the regular teacher,'' a bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Manmohan said while directing the Delhi government, MCD, NDMC to ensure such special teachers are appointed to teach differently-abled students.
The government, however, assured the court that 50 such teachers have already been appointed and more would be recruited in the coming days. Not satisfied with the reply, the court wanted to know about the steps taken by the government.
``We are not going to be satisfied with your assurance. You have to advertize and appoint teachers in all government schools,'' the bench said. The court's remarks came while hearing a PIL seeking a direction to the government to make schools disabled-friendly.
Back To School, 300 Schools Open Today For Students Of IX To XII
By akanshaa, Section News Posted on Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 12:03:48 AM EST
Thanks to the onset of monsoon, nearly 300 city schools affiliated with the Federation of Schools (FoS) have decided to reopen for classes IX to XII from Thursday. The rest of the classes, however, will start from July 8 as earlier ordered by the Delhi government. All schools were ordered to extend their summer vacation till July 8 due to extreme heat conditions.
R P Mullick, president, FoS, said, ``Since it's raining and the weather is much better now, we have decided to resume classes IX to XII from Thursday. All the 300 schools under FoS will open early now.'' Schools like DPS, Amity International, Ryan International, Springdales will still reopen on July 8.
Vinay Kumar, principal, DPS Vasant Kunj, said that changing the dates now will create confusion. ``We will open again on July 8 only. There is no point changing the dates now. We will go with the government order,'' said Kumar.
Bharti Sharma, principal, Amity International, Saket, agreed. She said, ``Weather is such an unpredictable thing. Once we delayed the reopening, many parents might also have changed their vacation schedules. Now calling the students before July 8 will also upset their plans.'' She added, ``It was just a matter of three extra holidays for us. That can be adjusted.''
Delhi College Of Engineering Upgraded With New Technical Education
By akanshaa, Section News Posted on Wed Jul 01, 2009 at 11:58:58 PM EST
Delhi Assembly today unanimously passed a Bill paving way for upgradation of the existing Delhi College of Engineering to Delhi Technological University.
Moving the Bill in the Assembly, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the upgradation of the engineering college will open up new opportunities for expansion of technical education in Delhi as more courses would be introduced soon.
Dikshit said her Government has prepared a blueprint to implement the recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission, which has emphasized the need for synergy between education and research.
"Keeping this in mind, it has been decided to upgrade Delhi College of Engineering into a State University under the name of Delhi Technological University," she said adding, it will be an autonomous university.
Officials said new BE programmes in software engineering, automotive engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, engineering physics, aerospace engineering, medical engineering and nuclear science and engineering will be introduced soon.
The global economic slowdown has also led to many job losses around the world. While India is better off than western countries, people have still suffered immensely.
Job loss is one of the worst fallout of any economic slowdown. What began as a housing mortgage crisis in the US last year quickly sipralled into a global economic meltdown and from September 2008 companies across the world began downsizing their workforce to cut losses.
Citibank cut 50,000 jobs globally; British Telecom cut 10,000 while Hewlett Packard cut 24,000 jobs.
India too felt the tremors with close to 50,000 laid off in a span of two months, according to executive search firm Redileon Search Partners.
Sectors that have witnessed the axe include real estate and construction whic saw 79 per cent cut in its workforce. Job is export and trade, too, are down by 79 per cent while IT and hospitality sectors have witnessed a dip of 50 per cent. Banking and financial sector saw job cuts by 22 per cent.
But numbers alone don't explain the full story.
''One afternoon when I went to office… I was suddenly called by the editor and all of a sudden he said that you have to go,'' says Barid Baran, who worked as corporate communication manager.

The boy-girl student ratio in the undergraduate courses at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) may soon see a positive turn. Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal Wednesday directed the IITs to admit more female students.
"Now it's (boy-girl ratio) about 10-12 percent and this needs to improve. We need to formulate an action plan to increase the intake of girl students in the IITs," Sibal said during an interaction with top officials of the country's 12 IITs here.
The minister asked the IIT directors to "develop a policy framework" and present it to the ministry soon.
Talking about shortage of faculties in these top engineering institutes, Sibal said "though it's a genuine problem, it can not be solved overnight".
To come over the situation, he suggested the IITs to have tie-ups with "universities, private educational institutes, the corporate sector and civil society".
He asked the IITs to open more campuses and become multi-disciplinary.
"Open more campuses. For example, IIT-Kharagpur can have its campus in Delhi too. Spread your wings like an octopus, I will support you."
"You need to have multi-disciplinary approach in education. Why can not you have a law school inside your campus. Why can not an engineering student learn about management, economics and biology?" he said.
Answering a question on whether he proposes to turn IITs into universities, Sibal said: "Though not exactly, the ethos of an university can be adopted for their betterment. They must go multi-disciplinary for the betterment of students, for themselves and for a better future."
