Indira Gandhi National Open University fee halved for poor

By Riti, Section Admission Notice
Posted on Wed Dec 17, 2008 at 09:53:47 PM EST

Course fee of various diploma programmes offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) would be cheaper by 50 per cent
for underprivileged students from January 2009 session. This was announced on Wednesday by the university.

According to university officials, the cut in the fee in the job-oriented diploma programmes such as diploma in value-added products from fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses and oilseeds, diploma in dairy technology, diploma in meat technology would enable students to seek employment opportunities in the diverse processing industry.

According to Ignou vice-chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai, "A large number of students cannot pay the fee despite our fee being low. Most of our diploma courses are in vocational education and since a majority of our learners (60%) are from weaker sections of society, it would enable them to get technical inputs and meet skilled manpower demand as per targets set under the technology mission in horticulture and food processing industries."

Pillai further added that the focus shall also be on areas of horticultural research, development, post-harvest management, processing and marketing. "The ministry of food processing industries has targeted that value addition level should be increased to 10 per cent of food production by 2010. The Vision 2015 document envisages trebling the size of the processed food sector by increasing the level of processing perishables from 6 per cent to 20 per cent, value addition from 20 per cent to 35 per cent and share in global trade from 1.5 per cent to 3.0 per cent by 2015. The incremental employment in the food processing sector by 2015 on the basis of the above vision is estimated approximately at 4 million in the organized sector (1.9 million direct, 2.1 million indirect)," said Pillai.

According to university officials, the initiative is to encourage more and more students from weaker sections to join the course, as unlike an open university, a conventional institute would not be able to handle a large number of students and offer courses at low fees and thus meet the growing demand for skilled manpower in coming years.

Seeking admission? Your child has better chances if you have a proven track record in any field

By Sumit Kumar, Section Admission Notice
Posted on Mon Dec 01, 2008 at 09:06:50 PM EST

As Schools brought out their criteria for nursery admission to meet the November 30 deadline, parents were faced with an indisputable fact -- their academic, extracurricular and professional achievements or failures would determine whether their child secured a seat in a school of their choice.

Vasant Valley School, Vasant Vihar, has reserved up to 25 points for "proven track record of parents in any field". DPS, Vasant Kunj and DPS, RK Puram have given 10 to 20 points for government employees.

At Blue Bells International School, Kailash Colony , professionals, including A Grade performing artistes, civil servants, defence personnel, educationists, sportspersons, researchers, doctors, qualified engineers and architects stand to gain 35 points.

"People who have achieved so much in life are already at an advantage. What about business families like ours? Or first generation learners?" said Ritesh Aggarwal, a parent who runs a family business.

Suman Kumar, principal, Blue Bells International School, said everyone was free to apply "The point system is . just a means to classify various as pects. But everyone is welcome to ap ply. For instance, businessmen in the neighbourhood stand a fair chance of being considered," said Kumar.

Children of parents ex celling in arts, media, and lit erature will get 15 points at Birla Vidya Niketan, while Sardar Patel Vidyalaya (SPV) will look at the par ents' involvement in commu nity service.

"It is important we en courage people doing excep tional work in areas like art, heritage and social service," said Anuradha Joshi, principal, SPV .

Many schools are, however, not con sidering the qualification of parents at all. "A parent's qualification is never a criterion for us because you never know what opportunities a parent got while growing up," said Ameeta Wattal, prin cipal of Springdales School, Pusa Road.

Nursery Admissions: - Queues end in confusion over criteria

By Dr arvind, Section Admission Notice
Posted on Sat Nov 15, 2008 at 11:35:10 PM EST

Parents stand in queue to collect admission forms for nursery at R.S. Junior Moders School on Humayun Road on Saturday

Long queues, traffic jams and hundreds of nervous parents marked the opening of the nursery admission season in Delhi on Saturday.

Parents or their drivers queued up early for the forms. Many of them, however, came back more confused about the criteria for admission. Early birds "My driver reached at 4 am to queue up for the form but there were already 20 people ahead of him," said Naina Mago, mother of 3-year-old Giana.

Modern School, Vasant Vihar, and Raghuvir Singh Junior Modern School on Humayun Road distributed forms on just one day on Saturday.

"Everyone came to collect the forms today. Most of us had to wait for two hours. The school handled the rush well. But it would help if they make forms available online," said Siddhart Sirdana, parent.

Close to 1,500 forms were sold at the Vasant Vihar branch, which has 120 nursery seats.

Interaction or Interview? Interestingly, all parents have been allotted time for "interaction" by the school. "We have been allotted slots for interaction between November 17 and December 12," said Sanjay Singh (name changed). "We have to submit the form and then sit for interaction. I am afraid it will be an interview. Both parents have to be present," he said. What's the criteria? Meanwhile, many parents who got forms for Modern School, Vasant Vihar, were confused about the criteria of shortlisting applications.

"The form does not mention the criteria being considered and how many points would be alloted to each criterion," said Vidya Shaw from Vasant Kunj.

"One of the office people told me that the school will give 30 points for people living in Vasant Vihar but only 18 for Vasant Kunj residents. They should specify the points against the kilometres," said Shaw.

Parents who were not from Delhi or had not studied in Delhi were also apprehensive about the criteria for selection. Principal Goldy Malhotra was not available for comment. HT

Rush for nursery admissions to begin today

By Sumit Kumar, Section Admission Notice
Posted on Fri Nov 14, 2008 at 08:56:53 PM EST

If the planned sale of admission forms at Modern School in Vasant Vihar is any indication, getting your child into nursery at a good school is not going to be easy. The Modern School in Vasant Vihar and its junior branch R S Junior Modern School at Humayun Road will sell admission forms for nursery admission for just one day, that is on Saturday, and that too from 8.30 am to 1 pm.

Parents keen to admit their children to Modern School have been keeping a close watch on the schedule of the school. Though the school's branch at Barakhamba Road hasn't come out with a date for sale of forms yet, the other two branches are expected to see parents lining up for forms from early morning on Saturday.

"I had been keeping an eye on the schedule of different schools and Modern School is the first among them to release the forms. Saturday will be an important day and I don't want to miss the chance. I have even taken a half-day leave from work,'' said Rajni Mehta, parent of a three-year-old from Krishna Nagar.

The parents will be required to carry a photocopy of the birth certificate of the child to collect the form. The submission date of the form will be given to parents when they collect the form.

Schools in south Delhi are expected to get maximum number of applications for nursery admissions. "Apart from parents in south Delhi, we get a lot of applications from parents who reside in east and west Delhi. Even if the parents have already got a seat for their children in schools in Ghaziabad or Dwarka, about 50-70% of them still take a chance by registering in the schools which are better known,'' said Madhulika Sen, principal, Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar. The school will start selling the forms from December 3-8 and parents can submit them till December 15.

Usha Ram, principal of Laxman Public School at Hauz Khas, said parents moving towards the NCR region may make a difference to the schools in east Delhi but not too much to them. "We get students from Mayur Vihar, Model Town, Gurgaon and even west Delhi. Last year, we received about 2000 applications for 140 seats,'' Ram said.

Amity International School in Saket also got around 4000 applications for 70 seats last year and the scene will be similar this year, says the principal. "We get students from east Delhi too. So the pressure on the school hasn't decreased,'' said principal, Bharti Sharma.

However, some schools do agree that the rush for nursery admission in south Delhi schools has reduced as parents have diverted their preference. "The rush is definitely less for pre-school but then many parents who don't get a seat in nursery come back next year,'' said Vinay Kumar, principal, DPS Vasant Kunj.
