Posted on Wed Mar 10, 2010 at 01:28:33 AM EST

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), in a bid to save time and money of students pursuing the Chartered Accountancy programme as they complete their course is planning to provide them with coaching classes taught by the faculty members through virtual and physical medium.

Amarjit Chopra, president of ICAI said that, "This initiative, for students who work for 14 hours a day towards completing their article-ship along with studies, will immensely help them to reduce stress while they juggle between tuition centres and workplace where they do their articleship."

Overhauling the examination system is also on the radar of ICAI, as it mulls to modify the academic pattern by basing it on the application model.

"The ICAI may introduce case studies in examination in order to test the aptitude and analytical prowess of students which will help them to build up their own understanding of the subject," added Chopra.

Under the aegis of the Board of Studies, the ICAI, on the physical front will put in place regular classroom teaching at all important places.

"Covering each and every aspect of the course, these classes are expected to provide students with complete guidance. Moreover, such an initiative will enhance the personal interaction between teachers and students where they will benefit from the face-to-face discussions," said an official from the ICAI.

The study material will be accordingly revised while keying on the applicability skills.

Application based questions in the Common Proficiency Test (CPT), Professional Competence Course (PCC) and Integrated Professional competence Course (IPCC) will be introduced in order to enhance the critical skills of students.

"The provision to provide coaching classes to students may take two years to evolve into a concrete shape. Moreover, we are also planning to undertake research projects particularly in the field where the Institute can come up with suggestions towards optimum utilization of scarce resources of economy for industry and government agencies," said an official of ICAI.

The ICAI is also lined up with another initiative which will ensure that the grievance redressal system e-samadhan becomes more responsive and effective.

New Horizons In IIT-JEE Coaching

By nargis, Section Coaching Tutions
Posted on Tue Feb 10, 2009 at 02:36:17 AM EST

Experts believe that IIT-JEE exam is one of the toughest entrance exams in India and it requires not only high IQ kids, but also very high standard coaching for up to two years with over four lakh students chasing approximately 8,000 seats. The odds at 1:50 reinforce the paramount need of excellent coaching which is in short supply and a nightmare for both the students and the parents.

One of the finest and most sort after names in IITJEE coaching is Vidya Mandir Classes, Delhi who through their pedagogy, content and processes have maintained admission success rate of 60% or more for the last two decades. The catch is that while over 50,000 students all over the country are interested to join Vidya Mandir Coaching, Vidya Mandir has been so far offering only 500-odd coaching seats.

Finally Vidya Mandir Classes have decided to offer more coaching seats by forging an exclusive learning partnership with "IIT Study Circle", a division of New Horizons India Ltd. Mr Shyam Mohan Gupta, director, Vidya Mandir Classes stated that, "We have realised over these last few years that there has been a distinct escalation in the number of students seeking our support in preparing for IIT entrance exams and we have been mulling over providing our expertise more extensively across the country. IITSC with its quality credentials and footprint across the country offered us that platform which we can leverage to achieve this."

The helpline, which has been running from 1999, also received calls from parents and relatives of students.

"Out of the 922 students, who were helped through telephonic and face to face counselling, 835 (90.56 per cent) were preparing for Class X and XII board exams. The rest were students from junior classes," revealed Mabood.

An analysis of the calls has revealed that 242 (26.24 per cent) students were having severe psychological problems.

"At least nine students talked about committing suicide. So it is very important for parents to talk to their children and make sure that their stress levels are low," said Mabood.

The Punjab government has issued directions to all government and private medical, ayurvedic, homeopathy, dental and nursing colleges in the state that they are not to charge any tuition fee and non-refundable fees from Scheduled Caste students who are eligible for post-matric scholarship.

Disclosing this here yesterday, Tikshan Sud, medical education and research minister, said the decision was taken by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal keeping in view the poor financial conditions of SC students. He said it was noticed that some genuine SC students did not get admission due to their failure to pay upfront fee to the institutions. Coaching Institute Fined For Charging Dropped-Out Student

By Leo11, Section Coaching Tutions
Posted on Wed Dec 26, 2007 at 01:13:42 AM EST

The State Consumer Commission has asked a coaching centre, FIIT JEE, to make the necessary refunds to a student who dropped out of the coaching programme after being dissatisfied with the quality of teaching. The coaching centre is required to pay a balance of Rs 55,000 against the fee amount of Rs 77,446 received by it. Rs 5000 as compensation and Rs 2000 as litigation costs are also to be paid by the coaching centre.

The total fee for the twoyear programme at FIIT JEE in 2008 was Rs 94,282. Pramod Panwar, a student at FIIT JEE, had paid Rs 77,446 in one go towards this amount. After attending the course for five-anda-half months, Panwar dropped out, finding the quality of teaching unsatisfactory. When he asked for a refund of the balance amount, however, the coaching centre said that the fee is not refundable.

``...By charging consideration for the period for which it is yet to provide the service, the institute forces the student to continue with the course despite there being unsatisfactory service ... in the quality of teaching, thereby jeopardising the career prospects of the students.'' said Justice J D Kapoor in a recent order.

The foursome demand fee refund and a compensation of Rs 1 lakh

Twenty year old Devender Singh had applied for an eight-month course at the Indian Institute of Hardware Technology, based in Yamuna Vihar in September, 2005, after he read about their
"100 per cent placement guarantee".

Because of his family's financial condition, he had to work part time to shell out the fee amount. Over two years have passed since then but even half the course has not yet been completed, Singh said. Singh, along with three other students of the same course, have complained to the East District Consumer forum, demanding fee refund and a compensation of Rs 1 lakh from the institute.

Singh had completed his Class XII when he took admission at the institute. He wanted a job desperately because his father had retired from the railways five years back and the pension amount was not enough. He enrolled in the GNET pro, thinking that on the completion of the the course he would get a job.

`Special discounts for early birds',`Comprehensive shortcut methods to success', `Special question bank' these one liner advertisements may not make any sense to you. But they surely do to over three lakh aspiring engineers and doctors across the city who will be appearing for a number of competitive exams which started from this month.

Coaching institutes of all shapes and sizes are leaving no stones unturned to lure these aspirants with crash courses of 150 to 300 hours for the entrance tests. ``Generally, we charge around Rs 12,000 for 44 sessions for AIEEE and other engineering entrance exams. We are also providing a discount of Rs 1,000 to each student if they come in a group of seven or more,'' said Saurabh Malhotra, business development officer, Career Launcher.

It was straightaway 20% less for the early birds even at Sahil Study Circle (SSC) for its crash courses for both medical and engineering entrance tests. ``We have been charging Rs 13,000 from the engineering aspirants for 280 hours and Rs 15,000 for those enrolling in crash course on pre-medical tests for 300 hours. However, for the early enrolments, we had offered 20% discounts,'' said Anil Gera, director, SSC.

DELHI CONSUMER FORUM - No advance fees, coaching centres told

By sachiv, Section Coaching Tutions
Posted on Wed Oct 25, 2006 at 12:38:00 AM EST

COACHING centres and technical training institutes will no longer be able to demand the entire course fees in advance, a ruling by the Delhi Consumer Forum has said.

"All training institutes and educational centres preparing students for entrance examinations... are hereby directed not to charge fees for the whole duration of the course in advance by way of lumpsum payment," the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission headed by Justice J D Kapoor and member Rumnitta Mittal said.

Holding that a no-refund rule is "unconscionable and voidable", Justice Kapoor cautioned institutes that violation of the order would attract punitive damages and erring officials may be sent to jail under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act.

The commission gave the students liberty to leave the course if they found it was not satisfactory.

"A student may leave in the midst (of the course) if he finds the service deficient, sub-standard and non-yielding, and therefore is entitled for the refund of the balance fees as well as compensation due to deficiency in service," said Justice Kapoor.
