Seminar On Free Software Begins At Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU)

By parul118, Section Events
Posted on Sat Sep 29, 2007 at 02:27:52 AM EST

Freed.in, a two-day community event to promote free access to technology, kicked off at JNU today.

Several industry experts, technology enthusiasts and academia discussed issues regarding developing and using free open source software (FOSS) at the event on Friday.

"An average user utilises his computer for a few basic uses like getting online, checking email, writing documents and making spreadsheets. This experience is not rocket science. There are several programs available for free, which can do this," says Kishore Bhargava, an organiser.

However, there is skepticism over using such free softwares when compared to propriety software which demand a charge for every utility. But, Robin Miller, Editor-in-Chief, Sourceforge, an online publication and site which hosts more than 130,000 free software initiatives, says, "If companies removed theft protection from softwares and dropped marketing, their products would cost 60-90% less. Also, in case of a free operating system like Linux, you can customise it for your own use."
