UPSC to reveal cut-off marks of Civil Services Exam
By Riti, Section Result Posted on Thu Sep 04, 2008 at 12:36:30 AM EST
The Delhi High Court today directed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to reveal the cut-off marks obtained by candidates in the preliminary test of the Civil Services Examination.
A High Court Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar upheld an earlier order which said that disclosing the cut-off marks would not harm the interest of either the UPSC or any third party.
The HC Bench also rejected UPSC's argument that the information regarding the cut-off marks would be misused by coaching institutes and hamper the chances of meritorious students of making it to the merit list.
Upholding the April 17, 2007, order passed by the single judge bench favouring the Central Information Commission (CIC)'s decision, which had held that disclosure of information pertaining to cut-off marks would not harm the interest of the UPSC or any third party, the bench dismissed a petition filed by the UPSC against the single judge's order.
It also dismissed the UPSC's apprehension that by disclosing the working of the scaling methodology for the preliminary examination, merit can be compromised and candidates with less merit would be selected. It said: "We are of the view that the apprehension of UPSC is not well founded."
The UPSC had approached the court against the November 13, 2006 order passed by the CIC allowing the pleas of candidates seeking details of the marks obtained by them in preliminary exam and sought separate details of cut-off marks for every subject.

By Sumit Kumar, Section Result Posted on Sat Jun 28, 2008 at 03:39:30 AM EST
The merit list for MBBS/BDS admission was released here on Friday, a day ahead of schedule.
Nine students, who scored 200/200, secured the top ranks in the list released by the Directorate of Medical Education.
Sonu Rajan of Sri Sankara Vidyashramam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tiruvanmiyur, tops the list and is the only Chennai student among the top nine. She is a third year dentistry student who could not get admission for MBBS in 2005-06 due to low marks in the entrance examination. S.V. Manoj Kumar of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram, has been placed second and V. Arun of St.Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Chengalpet, third.
The others are: T. Dinesh of Sri Vidya Mandir Matriculation School, Uttangarai; S. Venkatesh, and K. Kamalakumar of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram; A.M. Vignesh of Rosemary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai; E. Manoj Kumar of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram; and I.V. St Stephen's first cut-off list today late afternoon
By Riti, Section Result Posted on Tue Jun 17, 2008 at 06:01:58 AM EST
With the first cut-off list set to come out late in the afternoon on June 17 at St Stephen's, there are hectic parleys happening at the college. Teachers in the college have asked chairperson of the supreme council Sunil Singh to allow seats not filled by Christian candidates in the reserved 50% quota to go to general candidates.
Said a senior teacher in the college, ``As of now, the Bishop and the supreme council want the 50% quota to be filled only by Christian candidates. In case there are still vacancies, they are to be filled by the social sector -- SC, ST and physically handicapped. However, faculty members want these seats to go to the general category, as the social sector already has almost 20% seats reserved for it.'' Members of the faculty are holding talks with the supreme council regarding the matter, said college sources. ``The matter needs to be resolved soon as interviews start on June 19 and the cut-offs are coming out tomorrow,'' added the source.
On Monday, students could be seen filling out forms until the last minute at the college. While most didn't know about the 50% quota, the hope was that the cut-offs wouldn't go too high because of the disappointing CBSE English marks. The teachers, however, claimed it was too early to predict how the cutoffs would go. Said a senior faculty member, ``Going by the preliminary data, it doesn't look like the cut-offs would go very high though there could be some increase for the Economics course. But Science courses may see a drop.'
