How should I play sports at a higher level?
By sachiv, Section Sports Education Posted on Wed Aug 27, 2008 at 03:21:23 AM EST
I am an engineering student and take part in college sports. However, I want to play at a higher level. How should I do that?
While you mention that you are in your college team, you do not mention which sport you play To be able to .
get into a higher-level sports team, you need to qualify for zonal and state level matches, and then those at national level.
Today there are several , academies and institutes that select and train talent for practically every sport.
Private academies such as the Britannia Amritraj Ten nis Academy which , launched Leander Paes, and the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, have been promoting and training sports persons in different sports. The Sports Authority of India, and some state sports associations have also instituted special academies, which help nurture talent.
However, at the age of 20 it may be difficult for you to start training, if you have not already qualified for any competitive level.
If you are very keen on sports, you can also consider a career as a sports coach or physical education instructor, in sports management, or physical fitness. Physical education instructors conduct physical training classes and coach students in games and athletics. For the training of coaches, there is a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and diploma in coaching in different sports for graduates proficient in some sports at national or international level. Many universities including the University of Delhi conduct bachelor's and master's degree programmes in physical education and research in sports. An MBA de gree in Sports Management can take you places. International companies like IMG, Globosports and World Tel Sports are some international names in this area that handle the careers of sports persons and look after activities such as their career progression, business promotion and even media and public relations.

Should sports be made mandatory at the university level?
By sachiv, Section Sports Education Posted on Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 03:58:31 AM EST
"All work and no play make John a dull boy" This saying has been made more productive. Sports through systematic methods of training can yield desirable fruits. Sports involve regular practice. Regular practice involves coming together Coming together is the beginning. Staying together is progress and working together is success. These are the various components of sports during active participation. Therefore, I strongly believe that sports should be made mandatory at the university level. R. Clement Rajkumar, Sports in charge St. Stephen's College DU
I think that excessive sports in schools or even in colleges can spoil a child's life. Every child is not able to make a career in sports. So, in my view, indulging in sports at the cost of studies is not right. I think that increasing participation in sports at schools and colleges can lead to bad academic perfbrmance. Gyan Prakash Gupta, Teacher Delhi
A nation is built with its educational institutions like schools and colleges. Any satisfactory system of education should aim at a balanced growth of an individual, which implies not only excellence at academics but also proficiency in extracurricular activi- ties and sports. Participation in sports as a hobby is a great stress-buster and helps promote both physical and mental fitness. Therefore, universities should evolve a system, where students should be made to participate in sports on a regular basis, as a part of the curriculum.C.K. Khanna, Vice President, Delhi & District Cricket Association

Colleges woo budding sports stars, Selection Committees Begin Hunt Even Before Trials, Offer Perks
By Dikshit Dass, Section Sports Education Posted on Mon Jun 16, 2008 at 02:27:30 AM EST
They are headhunters with a difference. The hunting grounds are the school fields and the quarry, up-and-coming sports stars from these schools. Coaches in Delhi University colleges have been making the rounds of school-level sports tournaments as admissions kick off in the varsity. The mandate is simple: identify the best players and get them into the college.
Says Syed Shaheen, director (sports) at Zakir Husain college, ``As coaches, we go for various tournaments where you do come across good players at the school level.'' While Shaheen denies there's any official list of players drawn up and invites for admission sent to them, DU sources claim the headhunting happens on a more informal level. Said a senior teacher associated with the sports selection committee at a college, ``The college coaches get in touch either directly with the best players or with the school coach, who then encourages them to join a particular college.''
Shaheen admits several of his college's current players had been known by the sports committee before trials because of their performance in local tour naments. ``The Jatin Bedi tournament, organised at St Stephen's College for public schools in the city, is well known to be frequented by college coaches as it throws up new talent every year,'' says a senior teacher.

C'wealth Games: Rs 222Cr Allotted To DU For Students To Be Provided High Class Sporting Facilities
By Dikshit Dass, Section Sports Education Posted on Sat Mar 29, 2008 at 06:05:52 AM EST
Delhi University (DU) has been allotted more than Rs 222 crore for the upgrade and renovation of venue and infrastructure for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs announced the allotment on Thursday.
DU will now spend the amount on a stadium for rugby, a multi-purpose training hall for netball and boxing, in door hall as training venue for women wrestlers, outdoor track and field as training venue for athletes, seven rugby training fields and necessary basic infrastructure for these venues.
J S Naruka, Delhi University sports director, said that while the central competition venue will be the DU sports complex, the venues for training would be located at 11 different colleges.
Prominent among them are Hindu College, St Stephen's College and Hansraj College. Renovation will commence from April 15 and would be completed by November 2009.
"It would be a good thing for the university students to be provided with high class sporting facilities," said Naruka. According to him, outsiders will also not be barred from using the facilities. "We are open-minded about outsiders but a regulatory body will be formed in this regard," he said.
Other than DU, the Cabinet Committee has also allotted Rs 34 crore to Jamia Millia Islamia and Rs 1.74 crore to Delhi Public School, R K Puram.

Experts' in sports can forget about the % game and 'play ball' to get ahead
By Sumit Kumar, Section Sports Education Posted on Wed Jun 13, 2007 at 03:28:26 AM EST
One may land up in the colleges of one's choice in Delhi University (DU) even without those soaring marks as nearly all colleges keep 5 per cent seats reserved for those who have done well in sports and extra-curricular activities (ECA).However: it is not all that rosy for each aspirant keeping in mind that colleges like Kirori Mal have just four seats as against 100 applicants under the music category and St. Stephen's reserves just 17 seats for sports students and none for ECA.
The laurels that go to a college can be credited not only to excellent academic results but also to prizes and awards won by its different 'Societies'. The talent might come in handy for the adroit. Though, not everyone gets through the prestigious colleges, trying in other institutes too can take one through where percentages cannot!
The enabling principles are ability, adeptness in the concerned field and at least a 'bunch of certificates'. This implies that national, zonal and state level players stand a greater chance. The quotas cover basketball, volleyball, shooting, badminton, athletics, football, swimming, chess, squash, lawn tennis, yoga, golf, music, debating, theatre et al.
While St. Stephen's, Ramjas and Kirori Mal are known for their exceptional talent in theatre, trials may turn out to be stressful because of stiff competition.
From last yeal: the details of sports and ECA have to be filled in the ICR forms itself while prior to that, contenders had to run from one college to another for a separate form.
At last, 'experts' in their field can forget about the percentage game, and instead, 'play ball' and get ahead!

Delhi University All Set To Chart A Sporty Course
By sachiv, Section Sports Education Posted on Mon May 28, 2007 at 01:01:28 AM EST
Physical Education To Figure In 3-Year BA Programme As Optional Subject
Students willing to pursue physical education at the graduation level have now reason to smile as Delhi University is all set to introduce a new course in the threeyear BA programme.
The proposed optional course, passed by the university standing committee, will have three papers which will be studied for three consecutive years. The first paper is introduction to physical education, the second foundation of physical education and third professional integration of physical education. Miranda House is among the few colleges which has proposed to start the course this year.
``Physical education is an extremely important subject and kids need to know about it in depth that has been ignored so far. We need to incorporate it into academics at the earliest to encourage students to look at it as a separate discipline,'' said Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House. The proposal has been passed by the Academic Council (AC) last week, however, it is yet to be okayed by the executive council (EC).
She added, ``If EC okays the proposal, we will introduce the course this year itself as we have two highly-trained physical educators.''
Besides the history of physical education and physical fitness, the course will focus on principles and components of physical education, diet and nutrition in the first paper. ``The second paper will touch upon areas like anatomy, physiology of human body, sports medicine and health education while the third paper will integrate professionalism in the subject where sports psychology, sports management and budgeting will be dealt with,'' said Shireen Rathore, dean, colleges. The paper will contain theory of 50 marks while there will be practical and internal assessment of 25 marks each.

DU sports quota students face the heat
By Gaurav, Section Sports Education Posted on Mon Jan 22, 2007 at 02:08:03 AM EST
With the Commonwealth Games approaching, Delhi University (DU) is taking account of its sportspersons ready to represent the varsity at the international level. A dearth of talent has become a major concern for DU's sports department. In a letter to all colleges, the department has asked for a list of students who were admitted through the sports quota but are not representing the college or university.
Jitendra Singh Naruka, director, sports department-DU, said that efforts have been made towards promotion of sports in the university with admissions being granted through the sports category. "However, it has been observed that some students admitted through the sports quota do not actually participate in the college or university sports programmes," he added.
Sportspersons' interest in other federations and clubs take precedence over college or university. "There are legalities involved in such cases. If the students admitted through the sports quota are not playing for the college, then why shouldn't their admissions be questioned?" states the letter.
Students, on the other hand, cite reasons as to why they lose their interest in college or university activities. "Federations outside the university pay well for a single match played by a potential sportsperson. Each and every match counts for those who are in need of money to pursue a career in sports. Secondly, exposure to national and international tournament gives sportspersons a chance to make it to a higher level," said Suresh Lakhavat, football captain, Sri Venkateswara College.
The colleges have been asked to make a list of students admitted through sports quota but not playing for university.

Indraprastha Univ. is set to come up with a number of sports courses with an eye on the 2010 Games.
By sachiv, Section Sports Education Posted on Thu Dec 14, 2006 at 01:21:09 AM EST
The university will introduce three MBA courses: in security management, large-scale systems as well as real estate and building infrastructure. It will also start four short-term courses of six-12 months duration on sports nursing, sports physiotherapy, sports medicine and sports journalism by the next academic session.
The varsity has also tied up with various city hospitals to develop the medical courses. "I have spoken with Batra Hospital for the nursing course, RML Hospital for the sports medicine course and the Indian Spinal Injuries Institute for sports physiotherapy and they are working on the modules,'' Vice-Chancellor K K Aggarwal said.
The short term courses are specifically aimed at enhancing the skills of professionals like physiotherapists while the MBA courses are aimed at creating a pool of employable students. The response has been encouraging. "The university started the MBA on real estate and building infrastructure with 45 seats but because there was so much demand, we expanded capacity to 60 seats. The need of the day is employable courses''.
