References to Jat community cut from text book
By sachiv, Section News
FOLLOWING opposition from members of the Jat community on "objectionable content" about them in the standard XII history textbook titled Modern India, a portion has been removed from the syllabus for the 2007 Board exams.
This was confirmed by CBSE Chairman Ashok Ganguly today. A formal circular to all the CBSE schools has been issued today. After BJP, too, had voiced its objections, Human Resource Development Arjun Singh had assured that the said content would be removed from the book. "An eight-member committee comprising representatives from Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and NCERT had a meeting on this issue and unanimously decided to remove the portion from the syllabus,'' he said. Penned by Bipin Chandra, the textbook was introduced as an interim this year till the new textbook based on the National Curriculum Framework was not introduced for the next session. Work on that book is still underway.
The references found offensive by the comnunity appear on page 18 of the Class IX history textbook, Modern India, which deals with a revolt after Aurangzeb's death in 1707.
The text says that after the Mughal emperor's death, the community "created dis turbances all around Delhi". The text further says that "they (the Jat community) took active part in Court intrigues at Delhi, often changing sides to suit their own advantage". Speaking earlier to Newsline, NCERT Director Krishna Kumar said: "This is the last time that we will be using the textbook. It was merely brought in as an interim till the new textbook, with an entirely revamped curriculum, was ready.'' "Curriculum that makes sweeping statements about any community should be discouraged as we will have to make children learn to live together in the classroom as well. Education should be positive," said Ganguly. "I have communicated to all schools that the students are not be tested for this portion for the exams. In any case, a new history textbook based on the National Curriculum Framework will be out next year,'' Ganguly added. (Source-Indian Express,25/10/06)
