I hold an experience of 22 years in the banking sector. I have worked for four years as an assistant and 18 years in the junior and middle management in the biggest bank of India. I have recently appeared for the Senior Management promotion exam also. I am 44-years-old and now want to pursue an MBA, full or part-time. Is it advisable for me to go ahead at this age? Will it benefit me in my career in the long run?

A. My personal view is that an MBA does not teach you anything extra that you cannot learn with everyday experience over a period of time. At this stage in your career, therefore, an MBA would be less useful than a more focused or specialised programme (such as the CFA for example). I do not think that it will give you any great advantage in your career. However, it may give you a mental satisfaction so if you have the time and money, you can always spend some time on pursuing an MBA.

I am an Electronics and Telecommunication Engineer, working in an embedded software company. Which foreign language would be better for me?

A. Both German and Japanese firms are investing in technology to build applications around this area. However, German might be easier to learn than Japanese. However, you can be a embedded software engineer without having to learn any foreign language.

I am 27-years-old and am a B.Sc. (Life Science) graduate plus an MBA in Marketing and Human Resource Management. I have two-and-a-half years of experience in the Pharma industry as a medical representative. But, now I want to join the clinical research industry. Is there any scope in this field?

A. To make a lateral shift in your career to a function that you do not have previous experience in, you must do it from an existing employer, rather than a new employer. If you have an inclination for clinical research, please ap ply for a transfer to the R&D of your company to get basic credentials in research methodologies and process. This will help you make an easier transition to a fullfledged clinical research job in a suitable firm. You will also need to build up your resume with examples of your work that demonstrate you have a research mindset.
