SURGEONS TO BENEFIT FROM TRAINING IN COLON AND RECTAL LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY
By sachiv, Section Training
Superspecialisation in high end colon and rectal laparoscopic surgery will soon be possible in India thanks to a course that will be a part of Continuous Medical Education (CME). The course will be available to all doctors (surgeons) at a cost of Rs 600.
The course would be conducted under the aegis of Max Healthcare India, University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Centre, John H Stroger Jr Hospital of Cook County, Chicago and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, US. Till recently, superspecialisation in colon and rectal laparoscopic surgery in India was limited. According to Dr Sudhir Kalhan of Max Health care, "This training is aimed at young surgeons and residents to practice the difficult art of colon and rectal laparoscopic surgery. This is open to all surgeons in both government and private hospitals. And the patients on whom the surgeries would be performed during the training will be done at no cost to the patients."
Over 180 physicians from across the country participated in the first CME held recently in the Capital. The doctors witnessed live demonstrations of laparoscopic surgery in the US and Italy and interacted with surgeons via video-conferencing.
"Everyone including surgeons have a social responsibility. I am fortunate enough to be able to go to Tokyo or Hamburg for higher education, but not all doctors can afford that. We have the infrastructure and the doctors who have the knowledge of high-end surgeries should pass it on to younger colleagues." Dr Leela M Prasad, chairman, division of colon and rectal surgery at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, was also a part of the team conducting the course in India. According to him Indian medical infrastructure is 90% better than the US. The only problem is that doctors lack exposure to superspecialisation practices. He said: "Our goal is first to teach the basics of laparoscopic surgery and also give hands-on training on animals like pigs. (Source-Education Times,20/11/06)
