New hostels, classrooms and more teachers Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) has geared up to implement the first phase of 9% OBC quota from next year. Institute officials, however, stated that the 320-acre campus will be ``squeezed in'' to accommodate the additional rush.
As of now, approximately 900 freshers get admitted in various programmes at the UG and PG levels. However, with the implementation of the first phase of OBC quota, there will be an overall additional intake of 200 students. ``We will build new classrooms which will be bigger than the usual size to accommodate the increasing number of students from next year,'' said Anurag Sharma, dean, students, IIT-D. A new lecture theatre complex is also under construction on the campus. Though IIT-D should have provided residential facilities to all its 4,800 students but it could accommodate only 3,800 students in its 11 hostels. ``We will build two more hostels a 400 seated for girls while 900 seated for boys. Probably, at least one of them would be ready by next year to meet the additional intake. But these two hostels alone cannot bring a permanent solution as the intake will further increase in next two years. Construction of buildings and hostels is an ongoing process and we may have to plan for more in future''.
But he also agreed that being a very small campus, it may not be able to take the burden of over-construction. ``Of all IITs, we have the smallest campus and it may get squeezed in by constructing more buildings in coming years''.
The institute is also plagued by faculty shortage as it doesn't meet the 1:10 teachertaught ratio like the other IITs. Despite having 571 sanctioned posts, the faculty strength hovers somewhere around 420-430. However, in its preparation to accommodate the increased number of students, the recruitment process is in progress. Even though IIT officials hesitated to disclose how many more teachers have been recruited recently, but they said that efforts are on to meet the required ratio. ``One would like to see that IITD meets the 1:10 teacher-taught ratio,'' said B N Jain, deputy director, faculty. Giving an assurance that the additional intake would not affect the quality education of the institute, Jain added: ``As and when the government advises to start implementing the OBC quota, we will be in a position to respond positively.'' Students, however, are not in a mood to buy such plans as they feel that they will be at the receiving end due to non-availability of adequate infrastructure. ``Problems of infrastructure and faculty are grave and further addition in the number of students will aggravate it. It is not possible to be ready with the perfect facilities in such a short period of time,'' said Prateek Varma, a secondyear student. More construction may also lead to ecological imbalance in the campus, fear students. ``This campus is already over-burdened with buildings and further construction would affect the ecosystem further,'' said Avkash Gupta, a fifth-year student.
