I took my Class XII examination in science this year. I want to know about the course content of Microbiology and Biochemistry and also the future scope in these fields.
A. If you are interested in the world of micro-organisms like algae, fungi, protozoa, viruses and bacteria, Microbiology is a good option. The course includes subjects like biochemistry and instrumentation, virology, genetics, plant pathology and so on. With a degree in Microbiology, you may go into an area like medicine, where microbiologists study the patholo gy of disease causing organisms, or agriculture, where professionals work in areas of plant development, plant disease and tissue culture. Microbiologists also work in industry, handling the development of new chemical products and processes, in waste management and environmental controls as also in the area of marine microbiology, studying various marine micro-organisms that can be used as medicinal or food resources. Most of these options would require you to specialise at the masters level.

There are several fields open to students of Biochemistry. Those interested in the medical field can go into para-medical services while pharmacy is another option for which there are postgraduate degree and diploma courses available. There are also interesting career prospects in the area of biotechnology, a fast growing inter-disciplinary, research-oriented science field. Graduates of all science subjects are eligible for the M.Sc. programme in Biotechnology.

Those with postgraduate qualifications in Biotechnology are employed in leading pharmaceutical companies, chemical industries as well as in agriculture and allied industries. You could also take up environmental science, generally taught as an M.Sc. programme, and work with a company dealing with environment impact assistance for industries, in the field of pollution control and waste disposal, or in research and training.
