From pre-school to higher education, there will be a special package for Muslims, Minister of State for Human Resource Development M.A.A. Fatimi announced on Wednesday. The government will also examine the demand for reservation for Dalit Muslims on the lines of reservation for Scheduled Caste Hindus.

Demands

  • Participants at the meeting on the Sachar Panel recommenda tions demanded quality schools and colleges for Muslims.

  • They demanded that Muslims be taught in their mother tongue.

  • They also wanted special scholarships and loans at lower interest.

Talking to reporters after a two-day meeting with Muslim MPs, intellectuals and leaders on the recommendations of the Sachar Panel report, Fatimi said: "I want to assure Muslims that this time, the government is se rious about initiating action for their upliftment. By January 10, we will submit a detailed action plan, for providing education to Muslims from `anganwadi till higher education', to the Planning Commission for preparing specific projects in the 11th Five Year Plan for the community."

Participants at the meeting quality demanded more schools and colleges for Muslims and asked that they be taught in their mother tongue, Fatimi said. On the Sachar Panel's recommendation that the degrees and diplomas awarded by madrasas be recog nised, Fatimi said the government was ex amining the setting up of a Central Madrasa Board in consultation with reli gious leaders to legitimise madrasa educa tion. "A paper is being prepared but there is no consensus on the issue so far".

On the controversial issue of reservation for Dalit Muslims, Fatimi appeared posi tively inclined towards the demand, made by a majority of the participants. "In 1950, minorities were removed from the purview of reservation for Scheduled Castes. Later, neo-Buddhists and Sikhs were brought un der the SC reservation ambit but Muslims were denied the benefit," he said. He added that the issue would be examined by the government. The Sachar panel has also recommended reser vation for Dalit Muslims.

At the first meeting of the Committee tasked with prepar ing an action plan to implement the Sachar Panel's recommen dations, the participants also demanded special scholarships and loans at lower interest rates for Muslim students, so they can reap the benefits of educa tion. Union HRD Minister Ar jun Singh had constituted the Committee headed by Fatimi to examine the Sachar report.
