Delhi High Court's calling for adherence to the Delhi Education Act for the age limit for nursery admissions has put schools in a spot. The reason being that the Act says that a child should be five by the time he enters Class 1. This has prompted parents to send in applications for three-year olds as well.

"We are getting a lot of applications from parents whose children are only three years old. Before this, we had been taking in students who were four by September 30. But now, we are getting students who are three by March 2007. We have kept these applications aside and asked the Directorate of Education to give it to us in writing that we can take these kids in. We feel three-plus is a more suitable age,'' says Madhulika Sen, Principal of Tagore International School.

If three year old s are admitted and the upper limit for the class is four-plus, there would be children with a one and a half-year age difference in the same class. To prevent such a situation, some schools are not taking in four year olds, while others remain sceptical on having a three year old in formal school.

Ashok Ganguly, chairperson of the High Court appointed committee on nursery admissions, says an overage child should not be stopped from applying to nursery. "Most state boards follow that a five-year-old should be in Class 1... three plus should be the correct age for applying though six months up and down can be allowed. But no school should stop an overage child above four-plus from applying''.

But principals still have reservations. "We have given leeway to parents this year. They can apply if their child is three and also if he is four plus... but this we know will have repercussions as the age gap is too large. At such a young age, even six months is a large timespan...'' Sarita Manuja, Principal of Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai, says.

This also heralds a change in the pre-school industry, which usually takes in children at the age of 3-plus. "The Directorate of Education had made clear that a child upto five-plus was fit to go to Class 1. This effectively means that whatever schooling done before pre-nursery, nursery and kindergarten is informal. In my opinion, a child should be allowed to go to playschool whenever he is ready even at four-plus if necessary. This new order also means that the 12-month cycle followed in pre-schools will be disrupted parents will send in their kids at two-plus...'' Prashant Verma, from the Grammar School based in Ashok Vihar says.
