High Court Tells Govt to Monitor Nursery Admissions

The HC on Friday put the onus of ensuring strict implementation of Ganguly committee recommendations for nursery admissions on the Delhi government.

A division Bench headed by Chief Justice M K Sharma directed the government to constitute a panel to monitor whether the 100 point formula of Ganguly committee is being followed by public schools. The monitoring panel will collect the information and submit it before the court.

The monitoring committee would consist of CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly and DPS RK Puram principal Shyama Chona, who would interact with the government to oversee if recommendations are being adhered to by schools for the year 2007-2008.

Even as the Bench made the government accountable, K T S Tulsi, appearing for the state of Delhi, argued that Section 145 of Delhi School Education Rules conferred autonomy on the institutions for framing their own guidelines for admissions. The Bench then fixed March 8 as the next date of hearing while directing the schools to apprise the government about their suggestions and objections so that it can file a comprehensive report by March 1.

A key suggestion of the committee is that nursery admissions should be done without interviewing parents. The committee had put forth various parameters on a scale of 1 to 100 for the schools. Proximity to the school, siblings in the school, parents' alumni should be given weightage while selecting a child, the report suggested.
