Keeping up with technical advancement elsewhere, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is all set to launch a technical training programme for its teachers. The programme, to be started in April, 2007, will impart training on digital learning, web-based technology and many more technologies to make teaching-learning process more effective, covering a wider canvas, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai told reporters here today.

"The programme will continue for 15 days in face-to-face, on-line and satellite mode. It aims to create a skilled workforce which can efficiently use technology to reach out to a larger group who are out of education," he said on the sidelines of a seminar on "Education and Media", organised by IGNOU.

Discussing ways to create educational awareness, the panel also stressed on the role of media. A study conducted by Dr Kiran Bansal, Professor, IGNOU, revealed that on an average, news on educational issues occupies as little as 3.39 per cent of the total editorial space of a newspaper. The study is based on the content analysis of six leading dailies, but excludes the educational supplements. Dr Bansal presented the study at the National Seminar on Education and Media, organised by IGNOU on Wednesday.

Professor J S Yadav, former director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, said that the study is good as an exploratory study, but more research in the field is required. Dr Padmaja Shaw from the Osmania University questioned if the media is playing an effective role in covering the education sector. Dr Shaw said, "Reporting on educational issues needs to focus more on schemes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the mid-day meal, instead of catering to the needs of tutorials and private institutions which provide advertisements to the educational supplements of newspapers."

The delegates were of the opinion that the media needs to focus more on regional news and issues like funding of higher education and need for bilateral partnerships of foreign universities with Indian universities. The delegates stressed on the need for more media coverage of educational issues.
