American Model For 16 Universities
By Sumit Kumar, Section News
The 16 proposed central universities to come up in the next five years will function on the lines of American varsities and Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The administrative model would be similar to that of JNU's, while the academic structure will be as in American universities. In a report submitted to the HRD ministry, the Educational Consultants India Limited (EDCIL) said each university should be eguipped to enroll at least 10,000 students, with 80 per cent getting residential facilities. The report was prepared after Planning Commission deputy chairperson Montek Singh Ah1uwalia proposed expansion and reforms in higher education to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier this year. The report has suggested that the proposed universities should have six-year integrated courses with a two-year post-graduate course and a four-year doctoral programme. "The concept is similar to that of American educational institutions where they give more importance on research," said EDCIL chairperson Anju Banerjee. In addition to the conventional choices, the universities would offer professional courses in architecture and fashion, nano-technology, bio-informatics, paramedics and information technology.
