The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to place before it the guidelines issued by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on counseling of students. The bench headed by Chief Justice M.K. Sharma passed the orders while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) that has sought directions to the Union of India for making mandatory appointment of counsellors in all government, government-aided and private educational institutions.

Stating that students pursuing studies even at prestigious institutes like IIM and IIT were suffering with depression, the petitioner, an advocate, says there is a need to appoint counsellors at professional institutions like these.

The petitioner has also sought inclusion of a subject on self-awareness and self-management, in addition to personality development. He also asked the court to order the government to establish counselling centers even at the district level in all the States.
