Delhi University Exam System Goes Hi-Tech, Undergrads To Fill Up OMR Sheets, Get Computerised Marks

The examination system in Delhi University (DU) has gone the high-tech way. Now, the undergraduate students need to fill in Optical Mark Reader (OMR) sheets before exams, which will be electronically scanned to give students computerised marksheets. As of now, only the varsity's common application forms are in the form of OMR sheets.

With DU's examination system being criticised for errors and delay, this is an initiative to put things in place. ``Over 70,000 students taking up exams in three regular bachelors and honours programmes in all three streams would need to fill in the OMR sheets in coordination with the specific subject codes we have provided to each of the papers,'' said ML Singla, dean (examinations).

Eventually, students will receive computerised marksheets. ``Introducing OMR sheets is one of the first steps in making the examination system simple and technology oriented. Looking at how this process goes, we will get the computerised marksheets, either this year or next year. These marksheets would also be redesigned as the abbreviations would be replaced by the expanded nomenclatures of the course,'' said Singla. This year, marksheets of over 2000 School of Open Learning (SOL) students got laser printed.

A 70-page code book comprising subject codes for all papers of the six programmes has also been prepared to facilitate students in filling in the OMR sheets. Besides the regular students, those pursuing these programmes from SOL, non-formal and non-collegiate cells would also use the subject codes to fill in the manual examination form.

``With the courses being restructured in past three years, many students are not aware of their names and write them incorrectly. Subsequently, the marksheets also carried the errors. But the subject codes would make the process error free,'' he said.

Though formalities have already been completed using the old manual form, students will have to redo the process since the OMR sheets have been recently given to colleges. ``We have extended the deadline to January 15, and asked all college officials to help students in providing them with guidance notes before they fill in the OMR sheets,'' Singla said.

With colleges closed for winter break and outstation students headed home, many have complained that the time should be extended a bit.
