The Delhi Cabinet on Monday cleared a proposal for setting up the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), paying the way for a specialised university for technology.

The institute will have an autonomous status and would be established as a State university.

The Chancellor of the IIIT, Delhi, will be the Lt. Governor and a scholar of eminence will be appointed director.

Talking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said IIIT would be set up by enacting a state law "The IIITDelhi Bill, 2007".

"The IIIT, Delhi aims at not only at meeting the opportunities thrown up by global IT outsourcing but also at changing the paradigms of business in specific industry and work domains through increasing the ease of access, quality and cost effectiveness of services," the CM said.

Government officials claimed that it would be a pioneering institute in academic-industry partnership. The Insti- tute would impart education in fouryear B.Tech (IT), five-year integrated M.Tech (IT), two-year M.Tech (IT), PG Diploma and Doctorate.

Dikshit said it would also accommodate those students who are compelled from Delhi and NCR region to seek education and training in institutions abroad or through the distance education mode.

The institute is likely to function after the Bill is passed in the forthcoming session of the Delhi Assembly.
