Nursery Of Tutors For Tots In Full Bloom
By Dr arvind, Section News
With parents increasingly falling back on external `help and guidance' for the academic progress of their little ones, the city has witnessed a proliferation of a new group of professionals -- retired school teachers, postgraduate housewives and young college students -- ready to hone the skills of tiny tots.
Meet Nishi Kathuria, a postgraduate housewife at Kingsway Camp, who has been teaching primary students for the past three years charging a fees of Rs 600 to 1,000 per month. Though Kathuria's group of tiny tots do not hail from the families of working parents who usually turn to private tutors as they fail to spend enough time with their kids, she feels that parents shrug off their responsibility and pass them on to tutors. ``Most of these parents are educated and want their kids to do well. But they also admit that they do not want to burden themselves with teaching their kids,'' says Kathuria, who was a school teacher in Hyderabad 15 years back. But Schanpreet Kaur, who tutors nursery and KG kids from her Model Town residence, doesn't agree. ``I feel that parents are not confident of the the education system in schools. Some schools teach rhymes, verbals and number tables in KG and not in nursery. However, parents, who see other schools in the neighbourhood imparting these lessons, also want their kids to start learning these things in nursery itself. We have to cater to their needs,'' says Kaur, who also teaches in a nursery school. And she charges around Rs 1500 for KG and Rs 1200 per month for nursery. Click on "Full Story" for more...
College-going students have also jumped on this bandwagon to make `easy money'. ``My mother used to teach in a south Delhi school five years back and secondary students do visit her at regular intervals. Through her students, I got in touch with thelittle ones studying in KG to Class III and started tutoring them. I earn around Rs 1,000 every month by taking classes, which at least helps me to meet my conveyance and phone expenses,'' says Jaita Arora, a BA (Political Science) student of Delhi University (DU).
Provided the compensation package is decent, she is ready to take the `pains' of solving sums and writing exercise books. ``Though it may sound to be an easy job, taking care of the little ones is really tough as one needs to study each and everything in detail to ensure that the kid understands it well. I am planning to increase the fees next academic session as I have to clear my third year exams too,'' said Jaita. Source-(TOI, 19/03/07)
