NCERT books to be replaced and altered

RESPONDING TO criticism from the BJP and even some Congress members in Parliament, the HRD Ministry has decided to replace a Class XII NCERT history textbook, and delete "objectionable" portions from a couple of Hindi textbooks.

Among the authors affected are Hindi literary great Premchand and poet Dhoomil, revolutionary Punjabi poet Avatar Singh Paash and historian Bipan Chandra.

In the Class XI book Aaroh-I, Premchand's short story Doodh ka Daarn wE be replaced by another story by him. In Antara-I, a Class IX Hindi textbook, Apni Khabar, a story by Pandeya Bechan Sharma 'Ugra', and Mochiram, a poem by Dhoomil, will be replaced by other writing by the same authors.

The NCERT has also been asked to "suitably modify" Paash's poem Sabse Khatarnak as suggested by the Yash Pal Committee report. The panel was constituted to examine Hindi textbooks.

The NCERT has already informed the government it will replace Bipan Chandra's history textbook Modern India (first edition) with another book by him. Also, the "objectionable" references to Jats and Sikhs in the Class XII textbook - which created an uproar in Parliament and were criticised by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda have been deleted.
