Exam Dates On Collision Course

The dates of several competitive examinations are set to clash, sending anxiety levels soaring in both candidates and their parents. A majority of Class XII students are due to appear for these selections once the annual Board exams finish.
Science students are the worst hit. Many biology students hoping to find a seat in a medical college will now have to pick and choose the competitive exam they want to appear for, say parents. "My daughter, Sahiba, is supposed to appear for a number of competitive exams. Since her first preference is medicine, she will be applying to medical institutes. But she is also going to appear for other competitive exams open to all, like the one for the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)," said Madhu Sehgal, a parent.
According to Sehgal, AIPMT and the NIFT entrance test are both scheduled on April 1, while the AFMC (Pune) and MS Association entrances are on May 6. "The Bharatiya Vidyapeeth entrance test is on the same day as that of the Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College - on May 12," she added. Sehgal says there is not even enough time between the two entrance tests to allow students to commute from one centre to another.
Shamsher Singh Rana, a career counsellor, says dates of 16 engineering entrance tests are clashing. "Some of the most popular entrance exam dates are clashing. For instance, the West Bengal engineering entrance on April 22 is clashing with Cochin University's. Similarly, BIT Vellore and Narsee Monjee Institute (Mumbai), both are holding their entrance tests on April 15," said Rana. Parents say the exam dates should be compared and rescheduled because clashing dates cause a lot of stress among students. "The competition is stiff anyway, and if you are not able to appear for the tests, it just makes things very difficult," said Sehgal. (Source-Hindustan Times,07/03/07)
