National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has introduced a new methodology of assessment and accreditation with effect from April 1, 2007.

The new methodology of institutional assessment and accreditation, has been designed with a view to overcome the limitations of its earlier methodology, and to enhance its rigour, reliability and validity. Besides envisaging significant reduction in inter-team assessment variations, the new methodology, which is said to be userfriendly, is also expected to enable NAAC to conduct the assessment of a large number of institutions effectively and in a short span of time.

In all there will now be 25 parametres to measure the quality of the institutions.

V S Prasad, director, NAAC, said:"The primary aim is to at least ensure a minimum standard in all of the 18,000 colleges in the country."

As per the new methodology, there will be a shift from the existing nine point grading to three point grade in assessment and accreditation of higher educational institutions. One of the major highlights of this methodology is that a cumulative grade point average on a four point scale is used instead of numerical scores.

Also a two-step approach is introduced for affiliated and constituent colleges as follows:

  • Step 1: Determining Institutional eligibility for quality assessment.
  • Step 2: Assessment and Accreditation on a four point CGPA scale.

With a paradigm shift in the objective as well, Prasad said: "We don't want to control any institions, but through this process want to help them improve their quality. We also want this process to be more reliable, credible and reduce subjectivity. www.naacindia.org
