Even two months after the new academic session began, city schools are yet to get NCERT textbooks. Both students and teachers from Classes I to XII are grappling with the new syllabus and downloading the same from the NCERT website to prepare their own study materials.

``We haven't received any NCERT textbooks of history and maths for both Classes X and XII besides maths textbooks for Class VI. Even Class XI textbooks are not yet available in bookshops. To ensure that the students don't lag behind the schedule, we are downloading the syllabus from the NCERT website. We are creating our own study materials following the NCERT curriculum to ensure that students don't suffer. However, it is difficult to proceed in the same manner for long as the course has not only changed but has become bulky as well,'' said Shyama Chona, principal, DPS (R K Puram).

Echoed Bluebells School International principal Suman Kumar, ``We haven't received a number of NCERT textbooks for various classes till now. However, we have downloaded the syllabus to continue the classes.''

In the absence of proper textbooks, schools are preparing worksheets to continue with their practical lessons. ``We haven't received the new English textbooks for Class XII. To ensure that no time is wasted, we are preparing worksheets for the practical portion and once the textbooks reach us, we will do the lessons,'' said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School.

NCERT officials, however, denied that there have been any delay in printing as well as in distribution of the books. ``Textbooks of Classes X and XII have been reaching the wholesalers since February 15 and there has been no delay on our part while sending them to the market. But there may be some bottlenecks in the process of reaching the retailers. There are two reasons for the confusion and subsequently the shortage -- first, there are certain states which have been given copyright by NCERT to publish textbooks have failed to meet the deadline and students from these states have been collecting the textbooks in bulk from the city retailers. Second, schools which are not affiliated to CBSE also queue up for the NCERT textbooks. To avoid any shortage, we have also increased the print order to 4.98 crore against three crore of last year,'' said P Rajakumar, head, publications, NCERT.

Schools, complain that this is a tedious process. ``Getting the books from the NCERT counters is a time-consuming process,'' said Suraj Prakash, principal, CRPF Public School, which has not received maths and social science textbooks for Class VII and X and environmental sciences and maths for Class II.
