Session A Month Old But Schools Rely On Net Version As NCERT Textbooks Not In Market

The students gearing for Class 10 and 12 board exams want to start early, but only if they have their books. The printing press delay is posing a challenge to the academic planning as the new National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks are yet to reach the classrooms.

Schools complained that they have been moving in circles around the council but all efforts are in vain. ``We haven't received any new NCERT textbooks as yet for both Class 10 and 12. There is no positive feedback from NCERT either. To ensure that the students don't lag behind the schedule, we are downloading them from the NCERT website. However, it is difficult to proceed in the same manner for long as the course has not only changed but has become bulkier as well,'' said Shyama Chona, principal, DPS (R K Puram).

Though the new academic session has started almost a month ago, no textbooks were available till the third week of March. Of late, NCERT has printed textbooks in phased manner as only first few chapters of subjects including Maths, Science, History and Political Science are available in the market.

``NCERT has issued textbooks in different portions, for say, out of total 12 chapters in Physics, they have issued a textbook containing the first five chapters as a temporary measure. Though the topics remain the same, the approach and treatment have drastically changed from this year. But NCERT has not provided any sample papers related to these chapters, making it difficult for us to proceed with the classes,'' said Suraj Prakash, principal, CRPF Public School.

He added: ``We are running out of time as the syllabus needs to be covered before November. The teachers have not been provided with any guide on the new methodology and they cannot plan anything in advance.''

NCERT officials, however, denied that there have been any delay in printing the books and distribution of the same in the market. ``Textbooks of class 10 and 12 have been reaching the wholesalers since February 15 and there has been no delay on our part while sending them to the market. Two reasons are causing the confusion and subsequently the shortage first there are certain states which have been given copyright by the NCERT to publish textbooks and have failed to meet the deadline and students from these states have been collecting the textbooks in bulk from the city retailers and secondly schools not affiliated to the CBSE also queue for the NCERT textbooks. To avoid any shortage, we have also increased the print order to 4.98 crores in comparison to three crores last year,'' said P Rajakumar, head, Publications, NCERT.

He added: ``Schools can collect the textbooks directly form NCERT and also from the other counter in Bal Bhawan. However, the second part of the textbooks will be available in the market in another month.''

As repeated reminders to the NCERT have not helped the schools to get hold of the new textbooks, teachers said that they are preparing their own notes and distributing the same to the class. ``There is a new set of topics in the new Political Science textbook, which were not taught in the previous years. As we cannot afford to loose time waiting for the books to arrive, I am preparing my own notes with the aid of reference books in library and distributing them to the students,'' said Kusum Mathur, senior teacher, Tagore International (Vasant Vihar).

Added Springdales School (Pusa Road) principal Ameeta Mulla Wattal: ``It's a problem we have been facing every year and I feel sad for the students. But we have experienced teachers who have a good grasp of the chapters and concepts to help the students learn the lessons well.''

Even DPS (R K Puram) is creating its own resources. ``We are creating our own study materials following the NCERT curriculum to ensure students don't suffer,'' added Chona.
