The Government of India has decided to set up a petroleum research institute in Uttar Pradesh which is likely to be established in Bareilly.
The institute will be called Rajiv Gandhi Petroleum Research Institute. This was disclosed by Union petroleum minister Murli Deora in Noida yesterday. He was speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Oil Industry Development Board in Noida. The Union petroleum minister also disclosed that the government was to set up a 5 MMT capacity storage facility in the country for crude oil to fulfill the requirements of oil sector. Indian Oil Storage Limited will set up petroleum storages in Vishakhapatnam, Mangalore and Pedur at a cost of Rs 2,400 crore. In response to a question, the minister ruled out the possibility of any hike in petroleum products for the common man. On the contrary, the government has tried to provide relief, the minister asserted. The government has already launched a national gas hydrant to meet the needs of increasing energy demands in the country, Deora said. Eastern and western parts of the country are being surveyed to identify the needs of gas hydrant. On a suggestion by local MP Ashok Pradhan, Deora also gave a positive response for supplying gas to the Khurja potteries as a special case. From: TRIBUNE, 22-06-07
