It looked like a puzzle of `spot the difference' as the second cut-off list of DU was almost similar to the first one. With just marginal dip of around 0.25 to 1.5%, the second chance also left quite a few aspirants heartbroken.

But all aspirants need not despair as there are options galore beyond being a regular at DU. Even as chances of pursuing UG courses seem slimmer, the DU's School of Open Learning (SOL) can be a good alternative. The rules that govern the colleges in DU are the same for SOL and the syllabus too is no different. If something is missing, its the hype surrounding the cut-offs.

You will only need a pass in your board exams to enroll for the popular BA and B Com courses. For the Honours courses in English, political science and B Com, applicants must have 45%. The forms of SOL will be available on its North Campus office and the South Study centre in Moti Bagh. The forms can be submitted till August 25.

Jamia Millia Islamia is offering a host of options for students ready to experiment beyond the beaten track. A student having a taste for creativity can go for a Bachelor in Fine Arts. Forms for this course will be available in the university till July 3. For those of who are interested in the hospitality and tourism industry, Jamia offers a diploma course in tourism and travel management. ``The job prospects are good and companies like makemytrip.com regularly recruits our students,'' said Rakshanda Jalil, media coordinator of Jamia University.

In a globalised economy, India finds itself integrating into the market arena. The need for language experts, especially as translators and call centre employees are on the rise. For them, Jamia is offering a lot of diploma and certificate courses in such offbeat languages like Turkish and Persian. The last date for filling up these forms are between the July 31 and August 10.

``The qualifying marks for most of Jamia's courses are usually kept low, between 45%-55%. We conduct an entrance exam for all courses and then an interview follows. While 85% is given to the admission test, another 15% weightage is given to interviews,'' said Jalil.

Engineering has always remained a lucrative career option. Amity University is still accepting applications for its various engineering courses till the mid of July, informed Savitri Mehta, PRO of the university. This includes a B Tech in biotechnology. Alternately, students can opt for a BSc in forensic science or applied psychology. For those who want to test the foreign shores, apart from UK, US and Australia; New Zealand, Canada and Singapore are fast emerging as popular destinations among the Indian students. You will need to clear the mandatory TOEFL test to apply to most of these places. (With inputs from Shivangi Sahni)
