US is in the grip of a financial crisis, are Indian students nervous about studying in that country?
By Dr arvind, Section Study Abroad
The financial crisis in US has sent shockwaves across the world and students in India who hope to pursue higher studies in the US are also a worried lot. The overwhelming response to the recently held US University fair at New Delhi, however, was an indication that the country remains the favourite pick for youngsters in India.
The one-day fair was organised by United States Educational foundation in India (USIEF) and 26 universities from the US participated. The organisers said most of the students' queries related to the financial crisis and its impact on the higher education sector in the US. "It may affect the education sector also as it is an all-encompassing one. But it is too early to reach a conclusion. The US still remains as the favourite higher education destination of Indian students, though students are worried about the financial situation there," says Luna Das Bangia, North India Educational Advisor for USIEF. However, students thronged the fair with a lot of questions and returned satisfied. "Indian students are seeking quality education and they are searching for it like anything. Around 500 students visited the fair in a single day," informed Bangia. "I am worried about the financial crisis in the US as I am planning to go there for my higher studies. The university official cleared my doubts and I am satisfied. This fair helped me meet the university authorities directly. But I will enquire further before taking a final decision," said Naveen Rai, a student who hopes to pursue postgraduate course in fine arts. Click on "Full Story" for more...
The universities that participated in the fair offer courses ranging from engineering to management and biotechnology to fine arts. "I visited this fair as I wanted to join the MBA course in any of the good universities in America. Finding the right university is difficult and I depend mainly on alumni network to take a decision. However, it is fine to check directly with the university officials and fairs like this will help," said Sanjana Choudhary.
"Most of the students who visited us were doubtful about the job opportunities in that country because of the global financial crisis. The threat is there in the job market. But I'd say this would be solved once you pass out from the colleges. Some colleges may make tall claims about their placements. But ask them how many of their graduates get jobs in their given fields. At our institute we can tell you that 90 plus per cent of students get a job, or we can let our graduates tell and show you what kind of work they are doing," said Jennifer Dickey, Director, International student services, College for Creative Studies.
