As Schools brought out their criteria for nursery admission to meet the November 30 deadline, parents were faced with an indisputable fact -- their academic, extracurricular and professional achievements or failures would determine whether their child secured a seat in a school of their choice.

Vasant Valley School, Vasant Vihar, has reserved up to 25 points for "proven track record of parents in any field". DPS, Vasant Kunj and DPS, RK Puram have given 10 to 20 points for government employees.

At Blue Bells International School, Kailash Colony , professionals, including A Grade performing artistes, civil servants, defence personnel, educationists, sportspersons, researchers, doctors, qualified engineers and architects stand to gain 35 points.

"People who have achieved so much in life are already at an advantage. What about business families like ours? Or first generation learners?" said Ritesh Aggarwal, a parent who runs a family business.

Suman Kumar, principal, Blue Bells International School, said everyone was free to apply "The point system is . just a means to classify various as pects. But everyone is welcome to ap ply. For instance, businessmen in the neighbourhood stand a fair chance of being considered," said Kumar.

Children of parents ex celling in arts, media, and lit erature will get 15 points at Birla Vidya Niketan, while Sardar Patel Vidyalaya (SPV) will look at the par ents' involvement in commu nity service.

"It is important we en courage people doing excep tional work in areas like art, heritage and social service," said Anuradha Joshi, principal, SPV .

Many schools are, however, not con sidering the qualification of parents at all. "A parent's qualification is never a criterion for us because you never know what opportunities a parent got while growing up," said Ameeta Wattal, prin cipal of Springdales School, Pusa Road.
