Expats find favour with retail, manufacturing cos
By djain128, Section Jobs And Careers
The retail industry talked of it first, of bringing in Far-Eastern counter staff who had worked in the Middle East. Now, India's growing manufacturing strength coupled with a simultaneous slowdown in the western countries is having an unexpected effect. Ex pats are now looking for jobs in India, especially in the engineering, manufacturing, infrastructure and construction sectors at Indian salaries.
Those looking for the India experience are not just entry level people nor are they in top positions like the CEO or the finance head. Interest in working in India is coming from the shop floor too, that is, from the plant manager level, where average Indian annual salaries are around Rs 12 lakh. Definitely, not the bulge bracket. Kirloskar Oil Engines senior vice-president for HR Anoop Kumar pointed to recruiting agencies that have begun to offer the services of expats.
"A recruiting agency approached us with a database of expat managers from the plant manager upward. These are typically people in their late 40s and are looking for a couple of years work experience in India," Mr Kumar said, adding "these are offers from people working on specialist lines, which earlier was out of the capacity of Indian companies".
Accepting that people go where the jobs are and jobs go where the people are, Mr Kumar pointed to the hit that manufacturing activity is taking in the west. Industry is either slowing down or stagnating in other parts of the world while it is growing in India. HR heads in Pune-based companies described companies that are most likely to hire such talent: engineering, infrastructure, construction and even retail. Areas where specialist technical skill is coupled with managerial aptitude, which is in short supply in India. Source:www.economictimes.indiatimes.com
