St Stephen's first cut-off list today late afternoon
By Riti, Section Result
With the first cut-off list set to come out late in the afternoon on June 17 at St Stephen's, there are hectic parleys happening at the college. Teachers in the college have asked chairperson of the supreme council Sunil Singh to allow seats not filled by Christian candidates in the reserved 50% quota to go to general candidates.
Said a senior teacher in the college, ``As of now, the Bishop and the supreme council want the 50% quota to be filled only by Christian candidates. In case there are still vacancies, they are to be filled by the social sector -- SC, ST and physically handicapped. However, faculty members want these seats to go to the general category, as the social sector already has almost 20% seats reserved for it.'' Members of the faculty are holding talks with the supreme council regarding the matter, said college sources. ``The matter needs to be resolved soon as interviews start on June 19 and the cut-offs are coming out tomorrow,'' added the source. On Monday, students could be seen filling out forms until the last minute at the college. While most didn't know about the 50% quota, the hope was that the cut-offs wouldn't go too high because of the disappointing CBSE English marks. The teachers, however, claimed it was too early to predict how the cutoffs would go. Said a senior faculty member, ``Going by the preliminary data, it doesn't look like the cut-offs would go very high though there could be some increase for the Economics course. But Science courses may see a drop.'
However, faculty members say the jump won't be too big considering that the marks haven't gone as high as previous years. Sources say for instance, in Maths, the number of applications with 100% is not as many as other years, with marks of other subjects also keeping to a ``reasonable'' limit.
The college faculty, however, is hoping that even if the cut-offs go high, the supreme council would accede to the teacher's demand for allowing the general category to take unfilled reserved seats. Said a senior teacher, ``Some courses have several seats left unfilled as there are no takers in the reserved category. For instance, last year, seats in Chemistry were still empty after we had taken in Christian students with 60% marks only. These then went to the general category.'' St Stephen's will start its sports trials from the day after. There are 5% seats reserved for this category, above the sanctioned number of seats. Source:The Times Of India 17thJune2008.
