Delhi University Plans Integrated Hostel To Make Room For Classes
By sachiv, Section Hostels
Funds may still be in the pipeline but Delhi University has already started planning for the upcoming expansion in student intake. To take the pressure away from colleges, the university is planning to build a hostel where students from all DU colleges can stay.
Says DU V-C, Deepak Pental, "The idea is to leave the college space for classrooms. While students can stay some distance away from college, they cannot go for lectures in classrooms that are not in the college campus." To ensure that colleges can best utilise their campus space by building more academic-related buildings, the university is proposing to come up with the hostel in nearby Dhaka area, some distance away from the main north campus. Initially, the hostel will accommodate 1,000 students, says the VC. "It's not possible to provide accommodation to all students, but we hope to start with 1,000 students, and thereafter, perhaps make room for more," added Pental. The proposal also talks about a certain number of seats being allotted for every college on the basis of need and merit. There are more than 75 colleges offering UG programmes in DU. With funds still in the works, the V-C, however, is cautious about when the project will take off. "As soon as the funds are released to DU," is all he is willing to say. The proposal, incidentally, will also need to be passed by the various DU councils, including the executive council, DU's highest executive body.
DU has expanded seats by 18% this year, with the rest of the 54% -- for the 27% OBC quota -- to be implemented in the next two years, a substantial number of seats will be added to the university. Already this year, the university has added almost 7,000 seats. However, most DU colleges don't have a hostel facility, a fact that forces most outstation students to stay in rented accommodation in nearby areas. Colleges that have hostel have a long waiting list, with entry into them being closely contested. A measure of how important hostels are can be seen from the fact that Sri Venketeswara college principal, Dr A Sankara Reddy, tells this paper: "This year I expect the cut-offs in my college to be higher, as our new hostel will be starting from this academic session. So several candidates from outside Delhi will also be applying, driving up the percentages." Source: TOI, 01/06/2008
