Even as the registration process for admissions was on at Delhi University earlier this month, the various students' outfits and organisations that had set up help desks on the campus to aid and counsel newcomers also had their hands full. Dealing with confused newcomers and their parents was quite a task for some of these organisations catering to the students from the Northeast. The Arunachal Students' Union volunteers were at times even asked about "good institutes" for UPSC coaching.

"Accommodation is a major concern for people coming from the Northeast. They want to know about the hostel facilities and paying guest arrangements around the colleges. We recommend them various places in Mukherjee Nagar and Hudson Lines," said Lamtinthang Haokip, general secretary of the Kuki Students' Organisation, Delhi Chapter. "Most people who came to us were quite confused and were not even sure if they had filled out the forms correctly," added Bomril Pakam, an office-bearer of the Arunachal Students' Union.

In fact, students' organisations from the Northeast start preparing much before the actual admission process starts. They publish different information pertaining to the admission procedure in their local papers and magazines back in the Northeastern States along with phone numbers and e-mail addresses of their volunteers to deal with the queries.

"Students started calling up even before the registration process started," said Bomrik. These volunteers inform the newcomers about the reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and also help them if they have any problems regarding their certificate. "We write applications on their behalf to the University authorities. We take down the names, numbers and addresses of these students so that we can keep a track of them. Our volunteers also help them during the time of the admission to various colleges," added Lamtinthang, a research scholar at the University.
