The Delhi University may soon have special low -floor buses running across its campus to ferry the physically challenged students from one place to another. These buses will help the disabled students in commuting to the campus library and main roads. Also, plans are underway to identify areas of the Capital from where concentration of physically challenged students commuting to the university is higher. The university might extend bus service to these areas as well. The funds required for the purpose of starting this bus service have already been sanctioned and a final nod from the university Vice Chancellor and the Executive Council are awaited.

"At first, there would be two buses. These buses would run across the campus and will help students to commute from the library to the departments and Colleges. They can also be used to attend them to the main road," said S K Vij, Dean of Students' Welfare, Delhi University. He said that detailed project report is with the University Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental at present.

"Once he approves the project for which funds have been sanctioned, the same would be forwarded to the Executive Council for final say. We hope to start the service in this academic session itself," he added. Though, at present, the university has not decided on whether the service would be extended to residential areas of these students, officials said that plans are being formulated for avaibility of the same. "Such services and extra efforts are needed to encourage the disabled students towards education in the university system. Though there are more than thousand seats reserved for them in DU, not more than 350 are filled up. Students do not apply," said a senior DU official. Statistics revealed by the University on Thursday showed that even this year, not more than 320 students have applied for admissions in the physically challenged category till date.

Inadequate infrastructure for the disabled and a lack of awareness amongst these differently-abled students is often cited as the reason for why almost 700 seats go vacant annually. Most of them opt for North Campus colleges because of hostels as they need to be close to the college but there is no exclusive living space for the handicapped.
