Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Wednesday claimed that Delhi had become a pioneering State in the field of school education as its government schools had been performing better than even the well established public schools.

Matter of pride

Speaking at a felicitation function at Delhi University where he along with Delhi Education Secretary Rina Ray was honoured by the University fraternity for exemplary performance of government school students in the CBSE examinations, the Minister said it was a matter of pride that Delhi was the first State in the country to provide computer education in all government schools.

He also mentioned that the Department of Education was the first department of the Delhi Government to have e-governance in place.

Mr. Lovely also informed the gathering that the Delhi Government had implemented a 20 per cent free-ship quota for the economically weaker sections to give them enough representation in all the schools in Delhi.

The Government was committed to providing quality education to all in the city, he added.

Ms. Ray said the pass percentage for Class X had improved from 48 per cent in 2002-03 to 84 per cent in 2007-08. Also, she said, the overall pass percentage had gone up.
