Shri Ram College of Commerce upgrades facilities but fees up
By Riti, Section Schools and Colleges
Amenities come at a price. That seems to be the message at the Shri Ram College of Commerce. So even as the college celebrates its new-found status as an international level institute with central airconditioning and Wi-Fi on campus, the administration has quietly hiked fees. By a staggering Rs 5,000 for hostel fees and Rs 1,500 for college fees -- both bi-annual features.
The move, which not only came as a surprise for students but has also ruffled the feathers of faculty members, comes after several other colleges also went the higher fee route. But its the hostel fees which seems to have upset faculty members the most. Said Sanjay K Bohidar, reader at the college: ``The entire policy is skewed. How can you ask students to pay such a hefty amount when both the education and hostel facilties are heavily subsidised for students?'' According to Bohidar, it is the very people for whom the university system has made college facilities subsidised that are missing out on the subsidises.
The hike is one of the highest in recent history, claim college sources. Added another senior teacher: ``Already, some of the students from under-privileged backgrounds, who are academically very bright, are opting to live in rented houses in nearby areas like Vijay Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar rather than go for the hostel, even though their marks make them eligible for seats.'' The hostel fees, which were around Rs 11,000 -- to be paid twice a year -- have now been hiked to Rs 16,795 this year. Sources in the college claim the fees are being tipped to go up further, due to the infrastructural changes that have been brought about in the college.
Principal P C Jain however, denies the hike. ``Discussions on hiking of fees is still going on. They will only be announced once both the staff council and the governing body approves of them.'' When asked about the fees which have been put in the prospectus, a copy of which is with TOI, Jain said there may have been some misprint. Jain did admit however, that fee hike is being contemplated due to the increase in seats, which has to be within the sanctioned funds this year. ``We have to manage with the funds available,'' he added. Interestingly, the infrastructural changes that have been brought about in SRCC is thanks to the funds from the alumni, says the principal. Yet a head in the college is for infrastructure development fee -- for Rs 720, which is separate from the Rs 120 that is already charged for college development. The library security, which has been made airconditioned as well, fee has also been hiked from Rs 400 to Rs 1,000 this year, while using the AC reading room will cost students Rs 800 now, as opposed to Rs 500 last year. Sources claim there is also a move to charge a separate fee for the Wi-Fi facility. If this happens, teachers say they will protest, as students who may not use the facilities, and may not even be able to afford them. Source:The Times Of India 26thJune2008.
