Many students of Delhi University can now be spared the struggle of locating that text book on the lofty, often dusty, library shelves and standing in queues to get it issued. Come new session, and the students will be able to access at least 4,000 text books of undergraduate and postgraduate level online. Starting July 16 this year, students can read the entire text of these books at the click of a mouse from the comfort of their homes.

DU's project to make the text books available online, was initiated in 2006. But it had run into rough waters due to copyright concerns. However, the university got a grant of Rs 35 lakh from the government in October last year to start digitizing the books, which were older than 60 years, as they fell under `no-copyright zone'. ``We have already put 16 text books online and about 4,000 of them will be available on our website when the new session starts on July 16. We started digitizing the books in February this year and have already completed 2,500 books,'' said S Majumdar, head librarian, DU.

The university aims to digitize 30 lakh pages this year, that is, it expects to make about 10,000 books available online by the end of 2008. These books, however, will not include new text books as putting them online may amount to copyright violation. ``We have a rich collection in our libraries. The online resource will also have all classics. At the end of this year, we will again get a grant from the government to continue our project. We aim to put at least nine lakh books out of a total of over 14 lakh books stocked in 30 DU libraries,'' said Majumdar. Majumdar added that it was possible that books of some subjects might not be available online from July 16 as his team was picking up books shelf-wise for digitizing. Bibliographies and reference books will not be made online.

Besides, the university is also working on providing a master library card to postgraduate and PhD students under an integrated circulation and membership system. Students will be able to get books issued from 10 DU libraries initially with a common library ticket.

However, till an electronic version of the text books becomes accessible, students can always use the DU database of 30 categories including full text of around 7,000 books and 20,000 journals for research. DU had created the entire database for Rs 2.2 crore and is available in 76 colleges and 86 departments of DU on www.crl.du.ac.in other than DU's official site du.ac.in. This database, however, can only be accessed on DU premises.
