If English Troubles You, Log On To Delhi University (DU) Hindi Website

Delhi University is getting closer to the masses, virtually. The varsity's Hindi website is becoming popular with DU aspirants with about 60,000 hits per day. Delhi University Computer Centre (DUCC) translates and uploads the updates related to admission process.
The website was launched on September 15 last year on the Hindi Diwas and registered 10,000 hits per day before the admission season. Though the English website gets about 6 lakh hits every day -- 10 times more than Hindi, DU says that the new website is also gradually catching up with those not too comfortable with English. ``DU's Hindi website is the most extensive Hindi site in the country. Other universities may just have a page or two in Hindi, but on our website, every detail is made available,'' said Shobhit Mahajan, director, DUCC. However, he added it is still to become popular because the site is still not complete. ``It's a chicken and egg situation. It has to be there to become popular,'' he said. The Hindi website can be accessed through a link available on www.du.ac.in where the information on various courses in most colleges is available in Hindi. ``Information on the faculty, courses, syllabi in a university is ever-changing. We have to upload the records of 440 courses, 80 colleges and 800 faculty members and more. But we have to go slow as there is a dearth of good translators,'' said Mahajan. DUCC is making sure that all the updates on admission are available on the Hindi website too. However, the FAQs released by DU in English have been uploaded without translation for the same reason. ``The English and Hindi websites have to run parallel. We cannot afford to miss any admission update on the Hindi site. But it is difficult to maintain a site in Hindi because we need constant translation,'' said a member of the team responsible for creating the Hindi website at DUCC. The university had been hiring the students of MA and MPhil in Hindi, to carry out the task. Source: Neha Pushkarna From TNN 08/June/2008
