After almost a week of simmering tension, the striking karamcharis at St Stephen's College had another face-off with the college authorities on Tuesday.

Said a college source, "The karamcharis are now demanding a governing body meeting, as the matter is not resolved yet." The matter had erupted some time last week when admission was refused to an employee's ward in the college. According to college sources, admission of wards of karmacharis , while not formally stated in the college rules, has been the norm for many years. However, this time, the ward was not given admission as his academic result was not good enough. Later, the karamcharis demanded his admission in another course, but this also was not accepted by the college authorities.

Explained a college source, "Every year, the wards of karamcharis are given admission as part of the super-numerary seats. It's not formally laid out policy but is the norm." This year too, wards of the karamcharis had been given admission in various courses like economics, English, history and the BA programme. "When the ward of this particular karamchari came for the interview for admission in economics (honours), the admission committee felt that the student would not be able to pass," added the source.

The denial led to protests by the karamcharis , who felt that the ward, with a 67% aggregate and 85% in class X, deserved admission. In support of the karamchari , others too demanded an explanation by the college authorities, which quickly turned into a heated exchange of words.
