If you are inspired by the flashy sets of Deudas, awed by the stunts in Star Trek, or fascinated by the thought of lavish movie launch- es, media attention and red carpet treatment at award fkmetions, take some time to think about filmmaking as a career option.

But be warned - filmmaking is not only about glamour It entails a lot of hard work as well. It starts at drafting an initial story idea, comprises shooting, editing and distribution. Filmmaking takes place all over the world in a wide range of economic, social, and political contexts, using a variety of technologies and techniques. One can choose to be a producer: a director, a scriptwriter, or be in allied fields: film critics, film archivists or light and sound experts.

The production
Headed by the producer and supported by the production manager and assistant manager, the responsibilities of producing a movie rest on the shoulders of the production team. The producer is the decision-making authority, who obtains legal permission and hires actors and a director. A good producer needs to have directing skills too as production and direction, go hand in hand.

The critics and archivists
A film critic needs to be well read and have adequate knowledge about the field. Only someone who is well read can authoritatively judge and write about a film. Reading significant histories, biographies and un- derstanding the critical theories of films and becoming familiar with the concept of art films is what goes into making it in this line. On the other hand, a film archivist is involved with the collection, arrangement and presentation of archives including official documents, audio-visuals and photographs.

The shoot
Shooting is just one part of the whole process of making a film. The first important step is to decide what kind of story to make - it can either be a thrner: comedy, love story or based on a true-life story Only after the story is decided, are dialogues drafted and finalised, the assistant director after ensuring the proper sets, then decides to start the shoot.

Shooting a film is followed by the post-production phase which is equally if not more important than the production. At this stage, the film is developed and the best shot for each scene is chosen and compiled. Sound is then added, as are special effects.

The Courses and the training
A formal traimng, though not mandatory, is always preferred. A full time course offers a complete understanding of the different aspects of filmmaking and of the technical skills required at various stages. Those interested can join any of the good filmmaking or mass communication institutes and undergo training in a specialised field of their interest. "After graduat- ing horn the institute. it is very knportant fbr aim to wlE k in a In) ductitm house.muler the guidance of an established producer or di- recton:" says Ashok Pundit. Director tor movies like Sheen and Meri Zameen.

One should work under guidance for at least a year and a half to two years. Getting practical know1edge and learning from one's own mistakes is the best way to learn. "Theoretical knowledge is just about 40 per cent of the total knowledge. One needs to grow with time and experience," adds Pundit. Only after gaining experience, should one start his or her independent production house.

You are eligible to apply for a technical course in filmmaking after clearing the Senior Secondary Examinations. Some institutes conduct an eligibility test that includes general knowledge on Indian and international f1ms, aptitude tests on parameters like assessing visuals and audios. For a specialised discipline like sound engineering, a Physics graduate is preferred. Postgraduates in Mass Communication or diploma holders from film and television institutes can also enter as professionals.

Besides regular courses, some institutes also offer short-term courses designed for those who are already in the field and want to add to their skills. "We offer a fourweek, full-time course on fHm appreciation in collaboration with the National Film Archive of India and the Film and Television Institute of India. The course is primarily designed to meet the needs of the teachers who want to introduce fUm study in their respective institutes. Film critics, journalists, members of a film society can also benefit form the course," says Pankaj Rag, Director, Film and Television Institute of India.

In an institute, students are taught all the basic aspects, before specialising in any one of them. Starting from handling the camera, recording, editing, producing and post-production works etc. Individuals, who are hard-working, creative, have good communication skills and entrepreneurial ability would be suited for this line. Besides, it is very important for one to read a lot and watch a lot of films. One should also be socially and politically conscious and be aware of the happenings in the contemporary world.

The options
"On completion of a course, one may take up a salaried job with a production house or work as a freelancer," says Adinath Das, Dean of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. Filmmaking offers a wide range of career options. One can join a production house, advertising agency, television channel, or even work as a freelancer With the boom in the media industry, a plethora of opportunities have opened up for budding filmmakers in India. From the chance to make small budget movies to collaborations with production houses in Hollywood, there is something for everyone who wants to enter the fray Interested?
