Jamia Offers 3% reservation to Disabled Students
By Dikshit Dass, Section Admission Notice
The admission season is in full swing at Jamia Millia Islamia University and the varsity has taken a special care to meet the needs of the differently abled among its students. Jamia offers a 3% reservation to persons with physical disability in accordance with the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act 1995.
Candidates under this category are given relaxation to the extent of 5% in the qualifying examination. A maximum prescribed period of two years is also extended to physically challenged persons for passing examinations. Last year's data reveals that 173 students were admitted under this category. Of these 103 were at the UG level, 34 at the PG level and 36 in diplomas/certificates. The majority of them have taken admission in the faculty of education, others are scattered in the faculties of engineering, fine arts etc. This year too, admissions under this category are currently taking place but data has yet to be tabulated. A `Learning Centre for Differently Abled' was established in May last year in Dr Zakir Hussain Library. Aimed primarily at supporting the visually challenged students and staff members, the centre is a modern facility with state-of-the-art technology. Click On "Full Story" For More...
Jamia has already equipped the building with ramps to make it accessible to the differently abled.
The centre has facilities for providing access to printed material, websites, digital media, etc. Modern technology like the screen reading, screen magnification and optical recognition technology have been installed through various software like JAWA. Additionally, through the talking typing teacher software, students can also learn to type and operate computers, thereby providing them with an opportunity to enter in the field of IT.
