In a first, English may see third cut-off list : Delhi University
By Riti, Section News
Delhi University's decision to do away with the English entrance test may well see the course make an entry into the third list, even in some of the top colleges. Said a senior teacher in Hindu College, "There are still some seats left in the course, which may prompt the college to go in for a third list."
For many colleges, the English (Honours) programme going into the third list is almost unheard of. Take for instance, LSR. Sources here admit there could well be a further cut in the cut-off, as admissions haven't exactly taken off in the past few days, despite the lower cut-off -- by 3% -- from the first cut-off of 93%. "Though the drop won't be by very much, it may still need to go to a third list," added the source.
Other colleges also admit that cut-offs were kept too high in the first list, thus forcing students to keep away from admissions. Said a senior teacher in a North Campus college, "With an entrance test, colleges didn't mind keeping the cut-off lower. However, now, since marks are the only criterion, colleges have had to keep the cut-offs high, even though the results of the class XII CBSE were not too good."
It's not just English, however, that will go to another list. Other courses, especially the Science ones, are also headed to a third list, say colleges. While most saw admissions in the second list, colleges are still planning to go to the third list, as Science courses usually admit double the number of sanctioned seats. Said a teacher in Kirori Mal College, "The Science courses see many withdrawals as students get into Engineering or Medical streams or opt for other professional courses. So we usually over-admit students in these courses." The evening colleges are no different. Infact, for those who have missed the bus until now, there could be good news in these colleges as many are contemplating big dips. Said Dr Suresh Sharma, principal, Moti Lal Nehru (evening), "It won't be a surprise to have a dip of even 5% in the next cut off." Another evening college where students can pin their hopes is Sri Aurobindo College (evening), which so far has got a poor response in every course. Principal Dr Bimlesh Yadav said, "Since our second cut-off didn't come out in the university list, we've had few admissions. So admissions would be open for almost all courses in the next two lists." It's the same at PGDAV (evening), Dyal Singh (evening) and Moti Lal Nehru (evening), where a third list is expected in almost all courses except in BCom (Honours).
