DU Students Interested In Professional Courses Instead Of Just Regular College Degrees

Delhi University's popular undergraduate courses not withstanding, a significant number of students mostly those with lesser percentage of marks in their class XII exam are turning towards job oriented courses. This can be gauged by the massive number of applications received the School of Open Learning, DU that has started short term courses in Software Application Development, Desktop Deployment and Trouble Shooting, Retail Management and others. According to the senior officials at the SOL, the programs being run in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has received good response in its first year and that more than thousand students have applied for them.
"Not every student is interested, and even able to pursue just regular college degrees. Many of them want to acquire professional skill so as to get exposure in the field of their of job interest. This, I think, is the reason why so many students have chosen to go for these certificate courses alongwith the studies," said the official. He said that regular classes will be held at the Keshavpuram Centre of Campus of learning for these courses. "Students taking these courses would be assisted to join relevant sectors of industry. Depending on the performance during internship with industry, the chances of employment will increase manifold and stipend during internship will be offered to deserving candidates," said Vijay K Thadani, Chairman, CII National Committee on Education, who came up with the idea if starting this course in collaboration with DU. "The course includes interactive learning methods like case study, focussed discussion, group work, and feed back. Also there would be two months hands on training in industry," he added
Classes for all these courses would start from next week. Faculty members said that Software Application Development would equip the learner with knowledge of programming logic, techniques and structures and also the latest tools and technologies such as Java and .NET to enable creation of custom or packaged application in the software application development domain.
