For aspiring doctors and engineers, preparing for entrance examinations is an expensive affair. The Nai Sarak Book Market near Chawri Bazar metro station, that offers study material at cheap rates, comes as welcome relief.

Cheek-by-jowl with a dozen shops in the bylanes around Chawri Bazar metro station are a row of second hand books that stock study material for engineering and medical entrance examinations as well as course books for MBBS and engineering courses.

At the head of the lane is Vidhya Book Centre, popular with students for second-hand study material for entrance exams, which are very expensive otherwise. Store manager Kuldeep Kumar Sharma explained, "Students from poor- and middle-class families cannot afford expensive course materials offered by institutes like Brilliant Tutorials, Akash Tutorials and Dinesh Publications. We make second-hand copies of these available at less than half the price." Krishna Book Shop, a store on the footpath opposite Vidhya Book Centre, specialises in books on medicine.

"Medical Books are expensive. So MBBS students often come to us, as we offer 25 per cent discount even on first hand books," says Jai Mittal, the store owner. Given the nature of the MBBS syllabus, students flock to the store throughout the year.

"We do brisk business all the year through," said the owner.

Aggarwal and Company, opposite Vidhya Book Centre, specialises in second-handbooks on MCA entrance exams and biochemistry.
