Special Technical Education Training For Slum Dwellers

The Department of Training and Technical Education, Delhi government has started a new scheme to provide technical education to people in the informal sector, it announced on Tuesday Called TECOS, the scheme involves skill training in partnership with NGOs, who have a significant presence in the slums of Delhi. "TECOS aims to upgrade the livelihood skills of workers in the informal sector, school dropouts and those outside the work stream," said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
"TECOS will deliver innovative skill building training to the impoverished at low cost and provide training in areas with high demand so that people can get employed easily," Dikshit said at a function organised to formally launch TECOS. She added that the demand for skilled employees was increasing with opening of new establishments in the capital. Training under TECOS is flexible in terms of instructional hours, vertical mobility through modularisation in the sector and short duration of the training programmes. "In TECOS you don't need large amount of investment for building of formal institutes. Associated NGOs can build suitable venues and course specific infrastructure in a given locality, thus making the programme effective and cost efficient," Dikshit said.
At present, 17 NGOs are imparting various training programmes in slum clusters and rural areas spread across Delhi. The courses on offer include auto service, basic electrical training, basic sewing operatolf computer findamental MS Operator: internet, desktop publishing operator: hand embroidery hospitality assistant, make up artist and sale person retail.
