How should I play sports at a higher level?
By sachiv, Section Sports Education
I am an engineering student and take part in college sports. However, I want to play at a higher level. How should I do that?
While you mention that you are in your college team, you do not mention which sport you play To be able to . get into a higher-level sports team, you need to qualify for zonal and state level matches, and then those at national level. Today there are several , academies and institutes that select and train talent for practically every sport. Private academies such as the Britannia Amritraj Ten nis Academy which , launched Leander Paes, and the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, have been promoting and training sports persons in different sports. The Sports Authority of India, and some state sports associations have also instituted special academies, which help nurture talent. However, at the age of 20 it may be difficult for you to start training, if you have not already qualified for any competitive level. If you are very keen on sports, you can also consider a career as a sports coach or physical education instructor, in sports management, or physical fitness. Physical education instructors conduct physical training classes and coach students in games and athletics. For the training of coaches, there is a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and diploma in coaching in different sports for graduates proficient in some sports at national or international level. Many universities including the University of Delhi conduct bachelor's and master's degree programmes in physical education and research in sports. An MBA de gree in Sports Management can take you places. International companies like IMG, Globosports and World Tel Sports are some international names in this area that handle the careers of sports persons and look after activities such as their career progression, business promotion and even media and public relations.
