After a 200-seat computer laboratory in February, the main library at Jawaharlal Nehru University is set for another technological upgrade. It is set to procure an advanced printer for the visually challenged -- the printer has the technological prowess to translate English books and print them in Braille. Each line of Braille in the translated mode will be followed by its English translation.

The university's librarian, Krishan Gopal, claimed it would be the first such printer in India.

"We have placed the order to an agency in Dehradun, which will procure it from Switzerland," Gopal said. "This is one of our biggest efforts to improve facilities for the visually challenged students."

He said the printer would come in about a month's time, and would cost approximately Rs 4 lakh.

The university at present has a separate section for the visually challenged students called Helen Keller Unit, named after the world's first deafblind graduate. The centre has 20 computers equipped with special hardware and software, such as Kurzweil and JAWS among others. The two are screen-reading software that allow users to hear text read, as it appears on computer screen.

Besides the new printer, the library also plans to translate books into e-journals. For this digitisation process, Gopal said, the library would take help of the biggest names in the publishing industry -- the likes of Oxford and Wiley.

Gopal said the library is also in the process of making some 11.5 lakh newspapers clippings into digital format; they will be available in the library's Newspaper Clipping Unit and the work is expected to be completed within a year.
