With Delhi University seeking to promote an interdisciplinary approach to teaching, the Department of Financial Studies (DFS) has made the first move by offering two-non credit courses to students of MSc Mathematics free of cost.

"The idea is to make MSc Mathematics students market-viable," says Professor Sanjay Sehgal of DFS.

Course I focuses on the Indian Financial System and Course II on Investment Management and Financial Modelling. Each course has 30 credit hours at the end of which students are assessed and awarded grades.

DFS is lending a helping hand to the Maths department by offering this in- ter-disciplinary course free of cost. "We are helping the Maths department stu- dents with our linkages in the industry and ensuring that their presentations are showcased along with our own students so that they stand a better chance in the job market," says Professor Sehgal.

Banks, insurance companies, real estate valuation companies all require qualitative finance experts. The first semester, which started in July, will be ending on September 30. The second course is slated to begin on October 16 and end on December 22.

The department has also developed a new curriculum for its Master of Finance and Control Programme.

The revised programme, to be implemented next July, would include courses in Investor Psychology, Investment Philosophy Mathematics of Financial Markets and Technology Valuation.

The curriculum is yet to be approved by the Academic Council.
