Vocational training would become an integral part of formal education, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said here on Friday.

"This sort of training is essential in Class 10, 11 and 12 to make students skilled and capable of starting their own profession in case they do not pursue higher education," said Dikshit.

She was speaking after conferring state level teachers award to 73 government school teachers in a function organised to mark Teachers' Day.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and officials of the education department were present on the occasion.

"Basic education propagated by Mahatma Gandhi envisaged training of handicrafts. It is essential to train students in one or the other trade," said Dikshit.

She announced that a health scheme for government school teachers has been approved and would be implemented very soon.

She said teachers' vacant posts would be filled soon and recruitment would start against these posts.

Dikshit suggested application of video conferencing for teaching, as it would help in imparting best quality subject knowledge by a well-qualified teacher in one go to a large number of students at various schools.

She further stated that outdated recruitment rules would soon be updated in a bid to provide promotion to teachers.
