Applying online may be easier for parents but it is definitely costlier. Though the government has fixed the cost of registration at just Rs 25, the cost of prospectus and online registration passwords ran into several hundreds on the first day.

Applying at Apeejay School, Saket was ``way too costly'' for some parents as they paid Rs 400 to get the required pass code for accessing the form and applying online. ``Though whoever wants can take the prospectus freeof-cost from us, there is a special number parents require to apply online. It costs Rs 400 because there are a lot of hidden costs,'' explained school principal Anita Paul.

She added that though the cost of the form had to be Rs 25 as per government directions, providing the online facility involved the services of an external agency. ``Since the entire procedure is web-based, there is another agency involved. So there are many costs that parents can't see on the surface,'' Paul added.

Many other schools may not charge for providing a pass code, but they take a hefty amount for accepting forms online. However, it spares the parents from buying the prospectus. The admission process at Ahlcon International School, Mayur Vihar, Phase-I, is completely online. The parents have to pay Rs 25 for registration and Rs 175 as the online charge. Principal Ashok Pandey said: ``A parent can apply online without buying a prospectus as all the information is on the website. For economically weaker section, however, the parents have to come to the school and fill up a separate form which is free.''

According to instructions from the directorate of education, no school can force parents to buy the prospectus apart from the application form worth Rs 25. However, parents claimed a lot of schools did exactly the opposite on Tuesday. ``A school in Rohini is giving the prospectus for Rs 500. Another school in Janakpuri is selling it for Rs 225. And you can't dare refuse buying it as they supposedly mark your form number for later reference,'' confessed a parent from west Delhi.

Another parent said, ``I didn't want to buy the prospectus at Salwan Montessori School as it costs Rs 150. I will be applying in as many schools as possible and it will be too expensive to buy prospectus in all the schools.'' However, principal Anuradha Mathur clarified, ``It's helpful for parents if they buy the prospectus. But if parents wish, we allow them to take just the form.''
